I think what we’ve learned about Knowles is his scheme doesn’t fit against a team like Michigan. You need 3 LBs against that style of play and the ability to get pressure with your line.

Well not only Michigan tbh, ND, Georgia last year, essentially an offense that can really open up the passing game by running the ball effectively.

I sincerely appreciate the video, but I've poured through Ficks defensive stuff since his time here. That includes under Dantonio and Heacock when tOSU played a lot of cover 3. I know at Cincy he began bringing in elements of that Mod/match 3 that Saban is so popular for. Then those fronts that are all the rave in the big 12, the 404 and 505 type stuff. Allowing you to get flexible with your linebackers on who is the spinner or rush end. Something that jackass Rich Rod trying to unsuccessfully bring to scUM when he first arrived. Although we saw the direct counter to those fronts when Georgia smoked TCU by having big, inline TE's that can downblock like madmen off the pin and pull game.

Regardless of the actual fronts and coverages. Having that 7th defender, that nickel body being a more athletic type, transcends defensive philosophy. I'm not getting into some of the dime looks that are arguably 4 safeties as well. Only conveying that, walking out an extra linebacker as we would traditionally view them does not equal success against the run. It starts inside. The Bucks won some downs, especially early on, right on the IDL. Then as the game dragged on into the 2nd half, we started to lose those battles.

I've maintained this for a while, I question the current coaching staffs forethought into involving younger players in rotations earlier throughout the season to keep some of the wear and tear off your starters. Not just for the defense as well. It feels like a systemic issue all around.

edit: That said, when I get some time later, I'll pour through that video as well. Maybe there's details I missed or things I can pickup on. I am grateful for the information though.

I may not know all the defensive lineup variations, but they seemed their most successful Saturday when Simon was in with Eich and Chambers. Whatever position Simon was playing I classified him as a LB.

He complelty overhauled his philosophy this year to adapt to his players and the results last year. My only major criticism is our lack of rotation, which cost us dearly Friday. He complelty overhauled his philosophy this year to adapt to his players and the results last year. My only major criticism is our lack of rotation, which cost us dearly Friday. Yeah and the way Day has answered press conferences I think rotations are handled by position coaches more than the DC/OC. So that'd fall on LJSr and the rest of the position coaches

It’s all been discussed in intricate detail and while the defense certainly improved he still didn’t get the job done when it counted.

I find it hard to fully be able to judge Knowles when the head coach lets 1/3 of the defense do its own thing.
