DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Explain to me like I’m 5 how it’s a coaches fault that a player falls down.

Ok, since you asked

"You see Timmy, in the adult world we have a word that is spelled A-C-C-O-U-N-T-A-B-L-E. It means you are responsible for what happens, even if you don't have direct control. It's most usually used in regards to people who are in charge of other people. Even though they don't do every job, they are accountable for the results of their people. I want you to learn this as a kid because you'd be surpised at how many adults are running around this world that don't get it."

How's that?

It’s no good, people in the work world don’t understand that word either. It doesn’t matter how you break it down for them.

What was unrealistic? That a defensive coach was brought into to stop the tendency the defense had to give up big plays and when it mattered most that’s exactly what continued to happen?
Maybe give him more than one damn year before you decide he's trash and not worth saving? Jax has literally decided after the TSUN game he was irredeemable and quite frankly that mindset is trash. Yes he didn't turn in one of the worst defenses in last 30 years into one of the best over night. Yes he was probably to risky at times. The man owned up to now let him attempt to fucking fix it before throwing him in the damn garbage.

That's not accountability that you so preach that's scapegoating.

No, that’s not scapegoating when you get brought in to explicitly fix something that you don’t fix.

You think that folks in major companies are not held accountable for not achieving the turnaround they were hired to produce?

Feel like a broken record here but look at starters on defense last year and where they were drafted and then get back to me about how last year was all on coaching.

Sometimes the Jimmys and Joes just cant get it done.

And don't make me cite the LONG list of hall of fame coaches who struggled mightily in their first years with a program.

For a board full of pretty knowledgeable fans, many let their passion cloud their judgement and they sound dumb as hell.

If a company firing people for a few rough days when they know there is a deep issue that requires a while to fix they are a shit leader. And said company is probably going the way of Sears and Jcpenny.

And yes it is if you don't give them a reasonable shot to fix it. If a fortune 500 company hire a new IT head of it cause their infrastructure is trash. And then turn around and fire him in 6 months cause surprise the infrastructure went down cause it's still trash. That's scapegoating. They did not have a true scope of the problem or quite frankly gave no shits.

You have to give a reasonable amount of time to fix an issue and accept there are going to be rocky patches on account of those issues. With Ohio State we just hoped the offense was good enough to cover those issues. And down your top 2 wide receivers. Top TE and top 3 or 4 runningbacks they nearly were.

I must have misunderstood those write ups from @LordJeffBuck over the years about the talent being brought in and the disparity between tOSU and Michigan.

I never said anything or advocated for firing Knowles. Accountability isn’t always about firing someone.

Ok then we have some common ground. Listen to Knowles talk about the TSUN game and earlier this year abought last season in review. The man is taking responsibility and trying to fix it. I don't know what else you want other then maybe a random point that putting players repeatedly into a position of failure is on the coach which is how Knowles has handled himself. He has repeatedly said the fault is not on the player but him.

My problem was how some fans are handling this. With the what would you say you do here and Knowles knows nothing about defense implying we already should fire his ass without giving him a reasonable chance to fix it. Like they just expected a Hafley level defense without realizing the stupid amounts of secondary talent talent and transcendent Chase Young cover for a lot of shit.

I will withhold judgement on the Knowles-era until he’s had a chance to coach multiple defenses. Seems silly to me that Knowles be the object of fan ire when it was his predecessors that failed to bring in talent.

I don’t know if Jeff Halfley was just a fucking savant or if Chase Young was a cheat code, but I’m pretty sure Knowles could field a dominant defense with the 2019 roster vs 2022. LJ Sr and the rest of the D staff need to bare some blame for whiffing on their targets for multiple years in a row now.

Knowles can only cook with the ingredients he’s got.
