Yeah, I was trying to be brief. There is almost nothing about the defense that couldn't stand some improvement but the overall strategy is what I was getting at. Quit playing high risk/man free/whatever nonsense in these critical spots.
Have no choice but to agree here.
Most of the time I can talk myself into excusing the "bad calls" by the staff.
For Knowles, big plays early against TTUN? The offense wasn't quite clicking enough to pull away. Combine that with some PTSD from '21. Had to be aggressive to show that we won't be run on. JJ couldn't pass anyway.
Big plays late against TTUN? You know, we were down late in 4th. It was "gash or get gashed" time. It was unfortunate that we landed on the wrong side of the gashing, but at least we went out swinging. Sure would
not have been better if we sit back and let them milk the clock like Juice did in '07.
But that bust against Georgia, like what
@Jaxbuck said, we were up double digits midway through the 4Q of a shootout in the CFP, oh man. I'm not a fan of the term "Big 12 coach" used in derogatory fashion (me think they play excellent tactical football in the Big 12 to make up for talent deficiency) ... but you are literally from the Big 12, Jim. This is
the type of modern era "Big 12 game" we pay you 2 mil to win.
I get all the talk to be aggressive leading up to the game, but the D had done just enough up to that point. CJ was cooking, and has neutralized their run game for you, which was their biggest advantage over us offensively. The clock was our friend. It was time to protect the fruit of our labor. No need to "disguise" anymore, or to "play offense on defense". Play some
Inverted Tampa 2, which was made popular
in the Big 12. Play all your 3 safeties deep. Play some prevent. Play some
dime.
But man free coverage? With a dude who just broke his leg exactly a year ago, covering their supposed track-star? I know Ransom has played well until Nov 26 '22, and maybe you wanted to give him a chance to redeem himself. But you also said you wanted to be careful not to put too much on his plate. Just bad situational football, Jim, bad.
I have yet to come up with an excuse for this yet.
