I agree with you, and I also think coaching on the defense was a huge part of the problem. I am really excited about Knowles, as he's shown what he can do with 3 star recruits.

My response was just the first thing that popped in my head when you said we've missed out on a lot of our top recruits on defense over the last few years, and implied not to be worried. But we did miss out on a lot of our top recruits....... and we ended up with a shitty defense. :drunks:

From 2017-2021 the Pokes signed 0 five stars, 10 four stars, and 101 total three star or lower prospects. Of those 10 four star players, 8 of them were offensive skill players. The only four star or better players to play on D under Knowles entire tenure were recruits signed in 2021.

So, Knowles is coming off a season where his team went 12-2 and beat five ranked teams, OU & Texas among them, and in two losses still managed to hold Iowa St & Breece Hall to 67 yards rushing on 33 attempts, and Baylor (whom they'd already beat once) to 62 yards rushing on 33 attempts. As an aside, Mike Gundy's offense put up 37 points in those two games combined. 18.5 points.

Jim Knowles pulled that off essentially with a roster that lured just one Top 300 defensive prospect every other year!

This right here, or at least as long as Day/Hartline run the offense. You really don't need an elite defense if the offense is that good, just a defense that is above average. Do that and we will kick some ass.

That might be the internet expectation/reaction, but I am excited for the stadium to go absolutely insane for any defensive play/stop of any magnitude against ND (and for the rest of the season).

I think we kind of knew this generally, but seeing the numbers is astounding. TWO 4-star defensive players the whole run and those not until the end with the results he got. That's absurd and it wasn't against MAC opponents. We can say what we will about the B12, but they had some slinging-it offenses. DBB is right, we don't have enough information yet, but while not dispositive, his result history is persuasive. Kicked B12 offenses' (arguably better than B1G offenses) ass with predominantly 3-star and lower guys. I don't see any reason to think that the same thing won't happen here with more athletically talented players against a B1G schedule.

Also, I'd guess that our talented defensive players are tired of being the weak link, that they'll be fired up to show that they're on par with the offensive guys, and that Knowles & Co. has been stoking that fire. I'm very optimistic about the defense and I think it will start with a curb stomping of the domers.

Defensive recruiting is of little concern to me after watching OSU defenses play like absolute garbage despite having an immense talent advantage over nearly every opponent they play. 2019 was a generational defense when fully loaded and they were the worst unit I've ever seen wear the scarlet and gray the year before with nearly the exact same players. Give me great coaching and let the chips fall where they may.

Call me greedy, but I want both. Here's to the improved coaching most of us believe is happening, along with sustaining a high level of talent. Not necessarily the 2019 level (although that would be nice), but at least continuing "an immense talent advantage over nearly every opponent they play."

We want to see the defense be great from the start, against ND. But, the great thing about Knowles is that he should be here a while and we get a consistent defense in place where active players know what to do and recruits know what to expect. Think about the offensive consistency we have seen under Day and imagine that kind of stability on the defensive side.

The coaching doesn't concern me, nor does the talent. What does concern me is the time it takes to make sure every player is knowledgeable of their role, then lining up and playing assignment sound.

Communication and alignment (Pre-snap) are always the two biggest drawbacks to improved defenses when you bring in new coaches. That's why I'm grateful for having some having someone like Tanner Mcallister on this roster.
I haven't seen his named tossed around much, but I think he's going to be very important to seeing better play from the DB room. To have a player already there who knows the language and can help better disseminate that to everyone else both on and off the field is invaluable experience. The most underrated part of this entire off-season, IMHO.

Believe me I'd prefer both as well, but if I had to make a choice then it's an easy one.
