DC/LB Coach Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Good problem to have. Great defensive numbers in the first half, beginning of the third, and then give up some with younger players getting PT when up four tds.

All I'm hoping for is the wins. I don't care if they're 51-50 or 3-0. But I'm worried that Day is drawing the line in the sand at Top 10 Defense, and it's just not going to be feasible.
2002 - The Game. *ichigan scored points on ALL of their first half possessions. 3 field goals was ALL of their first half possessions. Now, you might see 3 touchdowns by one team in the first 10 minutes of a game. Or more. I understand that I'm cherry-picking my data points, but I think my point is valid: high-scoring offenses make it tough on their own defenses. I hope that the "Top 10 Defense" isn't the only metric Day is using to judge Knowles.

The stats will come against inferior opponents, which is everyone not named Alabama or occasionally UGA, OK, Clemson, so we'll constantly have things to work on but the depth at tOSU is where Knowles will find his diamonds in the rough. When we pull starters there are still going to be some studs getting playing time where I'm not sure that was the case elsewhere. Garbage time is called that for a reason so if we're up 28pts in the third quarter as mentioned, who cares about any other stats? LOL, we do thats why we're Ohio State fans!

It is rough on the heart at times believe me I know. But, I'm more excited about this hire than any other in OSU history besides Jim Tressel. The time that it happened and the quality of the hire combined is outstanding.

All due respect I better not see any fucking 51-50 games unless it's Alabama in the natty and then I'll still be puking I'm sure.

I think Day is drawing a line and it's real, but I also think it's aspirational and he's realistic. They're paying a lot of money and Top 10 should always be the expectation at tOSU, but I think what he's saying to the kids is that, despite the clownshow relative to the offense of late, they're talented and with the right system and coaching, that's where we should be. No excuses, for sure, but I read him as positive.

Totally agree. The giving up 20+ to Tulsa's and Toledo's of the world are what Day isn't going to stand for anymore. I don't blame him obviously depending on how and when the points are scored but he wants what Saban has and I don't want any other coach who doesn't desire the same thing.

The main concern I have is the pressure ideology being exploited with screens, draws, and wide open RBs slipping out of the backfield without anyone there to cover them. ND exposed this issue over and over again in the 1st half of the bowl game, albeit with a greener play caller, not Knowles himself.

Yes, if I recall the domers put up tons of points on ok state in the first half. I haven't watched it, but appreciate the explanation above. Until game 1 is over, yes I am worried

Jim Knowles has Buckeyes already excited to unleash 'edgy' defense

COLUMBUS — The Jim Knowles defensive adjustment for Ohio State football ultimately will be judged by the results of the 2022 season.

But one sure gains the idea that if Ryan Day were a defensive coordinator, the 4-2-5 Knowles is teaching is the same defense Day would run.

As the buckeyes head coach watched Knowles and the defensive assistants install one aspect after another through the spring, and as he has watched workouts through the summer, he has become more convinced he made the right moves with the overhauls he made to staff and scheme following a fitful last season.

What he has seen more than anything else is aggression. Like on some particular plays in the spring, he saw an attacking unit that brought him at least a mental smile, since Day, being the leader of the Ohio State offense, could not show overt glee.

“The ones that (stood out), offhand, were just a just a bunch of guys running to the ball blowing up a play in the backfield, with about 10 guys jumping up and down all over each other, with great passion, great energy, great confidence, talking,” Day said last week during Big Ten media days.

“That’s what you want, guys playing tough with great pad level, knocking the heck out of people. That’s what defensive football should look like. We saw some of that this spring. I think our defense has been edgy, and that’s the way it should be.”

With those words, Day might as well have been speaking the deacons of the Ohio State defense, as sophomore defensive end Jack Sawyer says on the Tim May Podcast this week.

“The defense now, we’re going after guys,” Sawyer said. “We’re playing offense on defense. I think that’s the key. I think last year we kind of let the offense dictate what we did on defense. You can’t play like that.

Cont'd ...

Well, that is at least encouraging that everyone seems to be candid about the issues we had last year and are not running away from it. Let your athletes go blow up the ball instead of waiting for the offense come to you. It sounds simple and maybe obvious, but it has to translate to the field or else passiveness becomes the norm. Sounds like Sawyer's wisdom is ahead of his age in understanding that, or Knowles has instilled the right mentality into him. Can't wait to see how the pieces all fit this year on defense, I am convinced the talent is more than there to be top 10 and I like that Knowles is not shying away from his expectations of this group. But as we all know, that has to translate into results.

Here’s the full discussion:

We got a good one.

Definitely get a Jeff Hafley vibe from him. Confident, a little cocky, still humble, yet overwhelmed by the fact he gets to deploy his scheme with legit NFL prospects everywhere. Just hope we keep him more than one year. Seems our kryptonite has been ridiculous, maybe unprecedented turnover at the DC position. I’d need two hands to count our DCs over just the last ten years. I guess I just really want this guy to be our Bud Foster or Brent Venebles…. Minus the Osterine.
