DB Tyreke Johnson (transfer to Nebraska)

I see this one a little different only in the sense that Williams got pushed out by legit young talent in a crowded WR room. Until I see otherwise, we need all the help at DB humanly possible, which makes it disappointing that Johnson never took the step and played to his ranking come out of HS because we needed it last year. Going to really need guys like Cavazos and Watts to step up in a big way. That said, hope he catches on somewhere and catches on (outside the B1G or Bama).

Johnson didn’t start a game for the Buckeyes and didn’t log an interception or pass breakup. He finishes his Ohio State career with eight career tackles in limited action.

And that's where I disagree. Johnson provided next to nothing, not even quality depth! There were numerous times last year that we all were looking for some semblance of a pulse at CB outside of Brown and Wade. 2020 gave Johnson literally every opportunity to step up in this defense, and I can't recall a single moment of his last year. And even if he did stay, his depth would've mainly been for special teams. Watching the spring game, we all were salivating over what Ryan Watts could do, and I'm sure the big DB class of 2021 would've pushed him further down. Best of luck ,there are a lo of FL teams that could use his services and build his confidence back up.

I don’t wanna be that guy but I will....

Hafley had the DB’s 100% bought in. This is a huge year for our secondary. They need to prove they can put their guys in best position to succeed. If our secondary is trash again, I don’t think our current commits hold up.

Hafley was such a beast at taking the strengths of each player and making it work as a unit. Tyreke didn’t pan out, and that happens all the time. I just hope we see a cohesive unit this season and guys balling out. We have too much talent to not be one of best secondaries in country. It’s indisputable.

I think the emergence of Ryan Watts, Cam Brown coming back (although that’s still going to take some time) and Ransom playing in the slot, is inevitably what’s pushing Tyreke out. I think there will be 5 really solid pieces in the secondary by the middle of the season in Banks, Brown, Watts, Ransom, and Proctor.

Then how is this like the Williams situation? Williams would be a great #2 WR here if not for a room full of guys who would be #1s at literally every single school in the country.

2000% and what's worse is that you don't see the guys competing and playing with any type of confidence which is equally concerning

What you said was kind of what I was getting at with respect to Johnson. He was pushed out but wasn't going to contribute regardless of who was here (or so it appeared based on the results we saw from our secondary last year and Johnson still seeing no PT). Whereas Williams appears to have been pushed out by much better players, though he might have contributed some.

@RB07OSU explained it.
Neither did anything with their limited roles. I'm sure the argument will be that Williams had some big long catches, but what else? He didn't show that he could catch the ball consistently or even run solid routes.

Hafley also never had to deal with an entire offseason that was canceled. And to compound that, a season that was shortened and games canceled due to the pandemic. Coombs was in an uphill battle(ALL 1st year coaches were). The fact that we even got to the NC after beating an ACC juggernaut who didn't have to miss any games. Hafley and Coombs' 1st year is not a fair comparison, the B1G seemed like it tried to screw the Buckeyes, and we certainly didn't help matters with our DB play. But this season will be a fair comparison for Coombs as he will be on an even field with all of the rest of the teams and have a proper offseason to actually coach up the DBs and defense in general. I'm sure Hafley would have some immense issues installing the single high without an entire off season and the unknown every week of having a game or not.

The funny thing is some of the more uninformed (imagine that) members of DFBIA are hoping he comes there just so they can say he left OSU to play there lol It takes one of their more level headed brethren to step in just to remind them and say “hey, he’s been there a few years and getting passed up by younger guys. He won’t see the field there.” And they’re like “oh... oh well still we could use the help.” Those boards are comedy gold lol

I can't off the top of my head think of any 5 star the Huskers have had on our roster. Tyreke should be a great addition to what has been a porous defense for a decade now.

What are your guys' thoughts on him? How much & how well has he played? Do you think he can help us?

To get a good feel for this guy's journey at Ohio State, peruse this thread.

He was a 5-star recruit, but alas, has thus far not been a 5-star college talent. We wish him well, but he was not going to see the field here. Maybe the Huskers can get more out of him than the Buckeyes did.
