DB Tyreke Johnson (transfer to Nebraska)

Yeah I wouldn't look too much into him not playing the first two years. Who was he going to play ahead of? The 3rd year projected top 5 overall pick, 5th year projected top 2 round pick or 3rd year project top 2 round pick?
The top end of that group was salty. The back half was pretty green and not impenetrable (though we've seen similar starts before great finishes from Apple, Conley, Lattimore even Ward to an extent)

The concern is that he was not in the top-10 of DBs last year, as seen by the PT/hierarchy vs Michigan, when they mostly cleared the bench. In fact, he may have been at the bottom of the non-redshirts.

1. Okudah
2. Arnette
3. Wade - out vs UM
4. Fuller
5. Proctor - out vs UM
6. Banks - 3rd CB
7. Riep - replaced Banks
8. Brown - replaced Arnette (injury)
9. Hooker - 2nd safety (w/ proctor out)
10. White - played a few snaps

Special Teams only
Williamson - played sparingly last year, but ahead of Tyreke imo
Johnson - similar to Marcus but a step below

redshirting: hickman, shaw

Now 1, 2, 4, 7 are gone. Will he be a contributor this year? He does not need to start or be the primary depth, but he needs to make a move. I think he will.

Re: After a redshirt season in 2018 and making just three tackles in eight games last season, Johnson had seemingly been building a bit of momentum during winter workouts and had caught the eye of Coombs early in March. He almost certainly has ground to make up in a competition against Sevyn Banks and Cameron Brown for playing time in the secondary, but a fresh restart with Coombs might be just what he needs.

“I think he fits more outside than inside,” Coombs said. “I think he had a really good start [this year], his winter was really productive. He is a very smart player, and I’m looking forward to him competing his butt off in the fall. I’m excited about Tyreke, and I think he’s going to have every opportunity to prove himself out there on the field, and I’m looking forward to watching him play.”

Just sayin': It takes some recruits a little longer than others to reach their full potential in college, let's hope he is one of them. With the openings in the defensive backfield (and Amir Reip* no longer on the team) the opportunities are definitely there for him this season.

Buckeye Football Notebook: ‘I’m looking forward to watching him play’

Five-Star Starting to Shine
In 2018, Tyreke Johnson became the first 5-star safety signed by the Buckeyes since Vonn Bell in 2013. Unlike Bell, who contributed as a true freshman, then started as a sophomore, and was an All-American as a junior, Johnson has yet to find his footing now entering his third season at Ohio State.

Of course, Johnson didn’t come to OSU to play safety, so the comparison to Bell kind of fizzles out after signing day.

Johnson came to Ohio State to play cornerback, where he redshirted as a true freshman. He played in eight games last season, seeing more than 10 snaps on defense just three times all year.

With the Buckeyes losing starting cornerbacks Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette off of last year’s team, the time is now for Johnson to begin meeting expectations.

Ohio State defensive coordinator and secondary coach Kerry Coombs sees Johnson as a viable option outside, especially after seeing how well he was doing in the winter and spring.

“I think he fits more outside than inside. He had a really good start, his winter was really productive,” Coombs said. “He is a very smart player. And I am looking forward to him competing his butt off in the fall. I’m excited about Tyreke. And so I think he’s going to have every opportunity to prove himself out there on the field, and I’m looking forward to watching him play.”

A Veteran’s Presence
When you recruit as well as Ohio State does, there will be players who don’t get to make their respective marks until their third, fourth, or fifth years.

Senior receiver Jaylen Harris, for instance, spent his first three seasons behind Binjimen Victor, which has made playing time difficult to find.

Harris caught just one pass last year, which came after catching just two passes in each of his freshman and sophomore seasons. Despite the five career catches, Harris has stepped up as a leader in a receivers room that lost three seniors off of last year’s team. It’s a relatively young group, but Harris has stepped up as a veteran leader.

“I think the whole group is making progression,” receivers coach Brian Hartline said recently. “I think that Jaylen Harris has made progression from December. As soon as we were done and moving on to the next year in early January, Jaylen Harris, did a phenomenal job. He’s been a leader. He’s on our leadership council. He’s doing an excellent job of taking the group under his wing and I’m really impressed by him.”

“I think he had a really good start,” Coombs said of Johnson. “His winter was really productive. He is a very smart player, and I'm looking forward to him competing his butt off in the fall. I'm excited about Tyreke. I think he's going to have every opportunity to prove himself out there on the field, and I'm looking forward to watching him play.”

What makes Johnson so intriguing is the untapped potential that once made him a five-star prospect out of Jacksonville’s Trinity Christian Academy, the school that also produced Wade. Out of high school, he ranked as the No. 21 overall prospect in the 2018 cycle, becoming the Buckeyes' third-highest rated signee behind Nicholas Petit-Frere and Taron Vincent.

Just sayin': He's kind of the forgotten 5 star recruit in the 2018 class. Also, this team is sure "loaded" with 5 star recruits:
Right now, the Buckeyes have 13 former five-star recruits on their roster: Justin Hilliard (2015), Baron Browning (2017), Shaun Wade (2017), Wyatt Davis (2017), Petit-Frere (2018), Vincent (2018), Johnson (2018), Zach Harrison (2019), Garrett Wilson (2019), Harry Miller (2019), Julian Fleming (2020), Paris Johnson (2020) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (2020).

Tyreke Johnson ready to prove five-star billing for Buckeyes

Tyreke-Johnson-by-Birm-Lettermen-Row-2_bozotw.jpg

Tyreke Johnson hasn’t had a chance to prove what he can do for the Ohio State secondary yet.

The former five-star recruit redshirted in his first season on campus and appeared in eight games last year, but he only totaled three tackles in action. When the Buckeyes needed a cornerback off the bench at any point, Johnson’s name was never called. He was an afterthought on last year’s defense after being a key piece to a recruiting class not long ago.

He won’t be an afterthought for long. He hasn’t even had a chance yet. And when he gets one, big things might be in store. The man who recruited him to Ohio State, Kerry Coombs, left for the NFL before Johnson could even play for him. But now two years later, Coombs is back in Columbus and ready to help Johnson tap into the five-star potential.

Just sayin': All the Buckeye forums are posting an article about this guy. Heck, this is the 2nd one this month by Lettermen Row.
