DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

Confirmed...may as well take a look at the list of incoming recruits, go ahead and peg anyone destined for "absolute stardom" and not expect them to dominate from day one, and go ahead and peg anyone "why the hell did JT recruit this guy?" into the 2-deep very soon in their careers. I am not spitting into the wind here, as there has been a definite pattern going on with tOSU recruiting since JT took over. Stars don't mean shit, and part of the fun is seeing that "2-3 star, reach kid" proving himself. Amen.

Malcolm Jenkins, the un-heralded recruited from NJ, coveted only by Virginia Tech and Rutgers, will leave one year of eligibility remaining on the table, at DB U that is, to declare for the NFL draft. 1st round style. Whudda Thunk it....

Ohio State's Jenkins Named to 2007 Thorpe Award Watch List

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Malcolm Jenkins, a junior defensive back on the Ohio State football team, has been named to the 2007 Jim Thorpe Award Watch List. The list, determined by compiling preseason All-American teams from various football publications, was announced July 25 by the Jim Thorpe Association.

Jenkins, from Piscataway, N.J., enters his third season as a starter for the Buckeyes. He was voted first team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media in 2006. A starter in all 13 games last season, Jenkins ranked second on Ohio State with four interceptions and 40 solo tackles (55 total). He had 4.5 tackles for loss and returned an interception 61 yards for a game-sealing touchdown in a home win over Penn State last season.

Jenkins, who also was a member of the Ohio State track and field team in the spring, has the opportunity to become the Buckeyes? first Thorpe Award recipient since Antoine Winfield (1995-98) claimed the honor in 1998.

Ohio State football: Jenkins faces growing expectations at corner

It's one thing to be good. It's another to stay good.

"You have to stay hungry once you're successful," Jenkins said. "It's harder to handle success, because success can put you in a spot where you feel like you're untouchable, you feel like you've done it all. But in actuality, you can always get better. You can always improve, and there's always someone working to get better."

If Jenkins needed a role model for this challenge, he must look no further than cornerback Ashton Youboty. Youboty also had a breakout year as a sophomore, in 2004. But his junior season was a disappointment. He left for the NFL anyway but was only a third-round pick -- of Buffalo, where he hardly played last season.

"It's the same situation," Jenkins said. "Ashton had a great sophomore year (and) everybody came to him, 'You can leave after your junior year, blah blah blah,' and I think he got kind of distracted a little bit.

"His mind was in other places and he had, to me, a bad junior year, and things didn't work out for him."

As true as it might have been I don't think it was necessary to say that in public. He took note, which is great! Hopefully that'll make him more focused than he otherwise would have been but, I think he unintentionally insulted a former teammate. (From Ashton's POV anyway)

I love Malcolm's midset...I think he is 100% correct about Ashton. Ashton had a great sophmore year and probably thought it was a given for an even better junior year. I anticipate on Jenkins having a great year...and fwiw, I've never met a nicer OSU player than Ashton Youboty and I hope he has great success as a Bill.

I always thought Youboty's struggles in 2005 were attributed to nagging injuries, especially after the MSU game. And that he didn't get much playing time as a rookie in the league due to a death in the family that caused him to miss a bunch of games.

But getting back on topic, it's still seems strange to me that Jenkins is now the vet. Just seems like yesterday he was the freshman that surprised everyone with his abilities. If Malcolm can improve on his 2006 season, then the Thorpe award should be his.

R0CK3TM4NN is right in that much of Youboty's junior year tailoff was due to his being hurt. As for those who are implying Jenkins was dissing Youboty, he wasn't...he simply made an candid observation.
