DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

We didn't exactly come out running Northwestern's offense any other game this season either. I don't think UM watched any of their 2000 game film versus the Wildcats in preparing for 2006 OSU, and they had little reason to.

Forgive Ron English for not expecting that. That's not a horrible job of scouting, that's a masterful job of planning by Jim Tressel.

Yes, he should've expected it. We opened up nearly every game by throwing the ball in 4-5 WR sets. We rarely tried to run the ball to get the offense going. I think he knew Ohio St. was going to spread it out a bunch. He simply couldn't stop it. No one can. Give him 51 days, hell give him 51 months and he isn't going to be able to stop our offense.

I'm not going to challenge your watching the Ohio State games this years and the games from years past...

But this was not the typical 'opening up with 4-5 wide sets.' This was an extended period of a fun-n-gun offense. We have NOT done that.

Back to Malcolm...

Isn't it fun to know you have a corner you can stick on pretty much anyone and shut them down for the entire game? If we play USC I'll bet you $20 million that Malcolm doesn't see another jersey besides #8. At 6'4"-6'5" NO WAY does A. Smith lineup on Jarrett. Here's to shutting him down too...which would be extra sweet considering how his recruitment shifted (thanks in part to Lemmlinghead).

ESPN's Todd McShay names MJ to his 'All-Film' team:

Who are the best players in college football? Forget the Heisman. Forget the All-America teams. And forget the politics surrounding both. The only way to truly evaluate a player's impact is to study the film ? and I've done that throughout the 2006 season in order to compile my Second-Annual All-Film Team.

Essentially, if I could draft a college football "dream team," the defense would look like this:

...

CB: Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio State (So.)
Michigan's Leon Hall would have been picked for the top cornerback spot were it not for his meltdown in the Ohio State game. Antoine Cason (Arizona), Eric Wright (UNLV), and Darrell Revis (Pittsburgh) are also viable candidates. However, it's clear to me that Jenkins has been the best cover corner east of Berkeley [Daymeion Hughes, Cal] in college football this season. A sophomore and first-year starter, Jenkins notched 52 total tackles and four interceptions during the regular season. With good size, long arms and fluid hips, Jenkins frequently lives on an island in press-man coverage and takes away opponents' top receiving threats. What sealed the deal for Jenkins was his performance versus the Wolverines. After watching wide receiver Mario Manningham eat up cornerback Antoine Smith for three catches on the game's opening drive, Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Heacock elected to shadow Manningham with Jenkins. From that point on, Manningham had just three more receptions for a measly 29 yards.

Malcolm gets some praise from CFN on their Sophomore All-American team.

cfn

DB Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio State ? Jenkins lettered as a true freshman, emerging this year as a starter and a first team All-Big Ten cornerback on the nation?s No. 8 pass efficiency defense. He?s a next level talent with the size to support in run defense and the feet and instincts to neutralize opposing receivers. Jenkins has the talent to begin next year as the premier corner in the country.

Anybody else think he's got a shot at making one of the Defensive Captains as a Jr.? Does Coach T consider underclassmen? If so, I think Malcolm and Animal are locks for the D side of the ball...and would do well with the duties.

We have had junior captains before, though maybe not under Tressel. I think Jenkins/Laurinitis would be great junior captains, given that the defensive senior class consists of basically just Terry and Grant.

I agree, I've also been wondering about the captains for next year with the lack of defensive seniors. You have to figure that if Pittman stays he will be one with Gonzalez, as well as Teddy if he stays, but then theres also Barton, so I don't know what the balance will be like, probably alot like it was this year with 3 on the offense and 2 on defense and then we'll start seeing our young defense grow up in 2008 and start taking the majority back from the offense.

He's a hell of a lot better than the more publicized Leon Hall this year. I think he could be a top 10-15 pick next year.

That's what I've been saying all along. Hall is vastly overrated, you saw what happened to him in the OSU game. He benefitted from a very good defensive line this season. Any cornerback that has as many pass breakups as he did this season isn't an All American. Most teams are afraid to throw the ball at the truly great cornerbacks.
