DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

Just to show you guys how talented MJ really is... The First series for Michigan Manningham had 3 catches for 57 yards when he was lined up against Antonio Smith.

After that MJ said they switched him onto Manningham for the rest of the game. So for 3 1/2 quarters Jenkins held Manningham to 3 catches for 29 yards... IMPRESSIVE. Jenkins is the best corner in the nation hands down.

MJ normally plays the field corner, Smith the boundary corner. MM was lining up on the boundary side (probably to create that match-up). After the first drive, I noticed that MJ was lining up on MM regardless of where MM lined up.

Jenkins shut down MM in a way that I thought only Andre Amos could

My question is what went wrong on the play that Henne misthrew a touchdown pass to MM. Was a safety suppose to come over and cover or did Jenkins just get beat that badly.

malcolm reacted like he was expecting brandon to cover mm on the post. malcolm threw up his hands toward brandon after the play.

i saw the way mj reacted as well. he clearly thought he had safety help as he made virtually no effort to even stay with manningham. but im wondering if he was in the wrong on that one. as out of position as the safety was and the way he reacted makes me think mj may have gotten confused on which side of the d he was playing on in relation to whether or not he actually had help over the top.

to try and avoid mental mistakes like this is likely why we tried to cover manningham with our base d rather than move mj around from the beginning of the game.

i could be completely wrong there and mj might have got it right. i saw the play the one time and then the reply the same as everyone else. but regardless of whether or not mj got "beat" on the play. if he did indeed have responsibility for manningham deep it wasn't the move that beat him, it was him not playing his responsibility.

Good analysis. It makes you wonder that if a rematch were to take place, would OSU be more defensively sound by beginning with a gameplan that has MJ assigned to MM and Smith on the opposite side with Arrington, rather than scrapping weeks worth of prep and flipping CBs after one series, as appeared to be the case that resulted in some blown coverage assignments? By the same token, would UM be more defensively sound if they had 51 days to prepare to defense 4 and 5 WR sets?

MJ didn't get burnt. It was a blown coverage by one of them.

And if I'm not mistaken, I think 2 of those last 3 catches happend on their final drive.

Not bad, Malcolm. Not bad! :)

my question is, why didn't they have Jenkins on MM from the jump in the 1st place? was it because they really didn't think he was healthy? i thought M was playing possum with him for the last couple games in order to unleash him in The Game...

also, i thought they were doing what they did with Gamble against Andre Johnson in the Fiesta Bowl, which was rolling a safety over... and i think that keeping MJ strictly on MM is what caused the mix-up on the TD to Arrington...

How horrible of a coaching job did Ron English do if he never prepared for 4-5 WR sets? It's not like we lined up in the power I formation 90% of time this season. If English didn't prepare his team much for 4-5 WR sets then that is a horrible job of scouting.

I am sure English prepared them for the 5 wide. It's hard to cover a 5 wide with the quality receivers the bucks have combined with an excellent, mobile QB with great field presence and vision. The line also did a tremendous job blocking.

Hall couldn't cover Ginn. Trent couldn't cover Robo. The linebackers couldn't cover Gonzo. Mundy/Adams couldn't cover anyone. Sears was lost. Michigan simply did not have the level of talent in the defensive back seven to keep up with Ohio State's skill players, and even their feared front four was held in check by our offensive line. It was a total mismatch, and thus you have 500+ yarrds of offense.

We didn't exactly come out running Northwestern's offense any other game this season either. I don't think UM watched any of their 2000 game film versus the Wildcats in preparing for 2006 OSU, and they had little reason to.

Let's recap OSU's first drive:
Smith, Troy sideline pass complete to Ginn, Jr., Ted for 2 yards
Smith, Troy sideline pass complete to Ginn, Jr., Ted for 11 yards
Smith, Troy deep out pass incomplete to Ginn, Jr., Ted.
Smith, Troy middle pass complete to Hartline, Brian for 6 yards
Smith, Troy slant pass complete to Robiskie, B for 5 yards
Smith, Troy sacked for loss of 5 yards
Smith, Troy screen pass complete to Pittman, A for loss of 1 yard
Smith, Troy middle pass complete to Hall, Roy for 27 yards
Pittman, A rush up middle for 5 yards
Smith, Troy slant pass incomplete to Ginn, Jr., Ted.
Smith, Troy slant pass complete to Hall, Roy for 10 yards
Smith, Troy slant pass complete to White, Jr., S for 7 yards
Pittman, A rush up middle for 1 yard
Smith, Troy pass complete to Hall, Roy for 1 yard

TOUCHDOWN, clock 06:03.
That's 12 pass attempts and 9 completions - against 2 runs - with 6 different people catching passes, including 4 different WRs, the RB, and the FB. Gonzo didn't even have a catch that drive.

Forgive Ron English for not expecting that. That's not a horrible job of scouting, that's a masterful job of planning by Jim Tressel.

Remember oh8ch's references to Tressel and English carrying on a conversation in game film all season long? This is why JT is the football equivilent of a grand master of chess. There was nothing in 6 years of Ohio State game film that tipped Michigan off to this.
