DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

Malcolm Jenkins avoiding contact? Thad Matta will forget how to recruit before that happens...

Just saying I just hope he doesn't what Gamble did...I would agree he very likely won't take any plays off, but Gamble didn't like he would either.

It's a virtual lock he jumps after this season...let's hope he has a great one and that the solid corps of young DB studs in his stead watch and learn.

OT: I hear a lot about this gamble taking plays off (so i'm sure he did) but is there any specific plays that could be brought to attention?

I remember the Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State, when Kansas State came back in the second half of the game. I also think Gamble admitted to taking plays off in that game to the press.

With all due respect to Chris Gamble... do you realize the amount of PT he got? He rarely ever came off the field! Even the best conditioned athletes can't keep it up all game long. As long as he was playing as hard as he could when it counted, that's what mattered. Chris Gamble was a frickin' stud for the Buckeyes.

I believe you are right in regards to him admitting it to the press, so I don't doubt it. I was just curious of a play where I could maybe see it for myself, since I didn't realize it at the time.

I don't think he said he took plays off, but that he was playing not to get hurt, a...which i guess was taking plays off to some extent.

In that game against Kansas State though, he left it all out there...i remember he broke his facemask making a tackle....he knew it was his last game as a buckeye

Damn guys, we are talking about Malcolm Jenkins here, your guys points are invalid eather way, it is obvious that Malcolm is getting in on every tackle possible, even when it is clear the guy is down. He is getting in on as much contact as possible, so can we get back to discussing Malcolm Jenkins instead of Chris Gamble who has his own damn thread.

I have it on good authority that the following point will be made in BP's preview of the Akron game. I'm sure the author wouldn't mind me reciting the facts in this thread.

Malcolm had 2 tackles against YSU.
  • One on a draw play
  • One on a screen pass that gained 1 yard - one whole yard
This is one of the best stat lines you'll see for a cornerback. When a CB's only tackle on a pass play is assisted by a Defensive Tackle (Denlinger in this case), it is clear that his side of the field is not, I repeat NOT open for business.

The upcoming opponent (Akron) has one very good receiver, and no one else even close. Shut-down Jabari Arthur, the Zips air attack is grounded.

I've already bet all of my vCash on games, but if I had any left I'd put it all on Arthur being shut-down/shut-out while Malcolm is on the field.

I think Arthur will be shut down anyway... but not necessarilly because of Jenkins. How the Buckeyes ususally play their corners is (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) one corner plays the short side and one plays the wide side ( I think Jenkins usually the wide). If you go back and watch last year's scUM game the skunkbears got the match-up with Antonio Smith on Manningham early because of this... unil Heacock adjusted and put Malcom on MM all the time. I really don't think Arthur will be good enough to switch up the Defense.

You may be right about this. I honestly don't know. Some people whose opinions I respect have said that Arthur is pretty special. Going against athletes like ours, he may not be that special. We'll see.

What I was mostly basing my conjecture on was the difference between Arthur and their next best receiver, which is inarguably a giant chasm. He accounted for 81% of the teams passing offense vs. Army.

As they are so one-handed in the passing game, it stands to reason that OSU would do something to clamp down on their favorite option. The way I see it there are 3 options:
  1. Put MJ on him full time
  2. Use our Safeties to tighten the screws
  3. Ignore their one-handedness and play straight-up
Option 1 erases him completely IMHO. Option 2 limits his productivity, might open up something for someone else and might result in an interception or two. The coaches may go for Option 3 for reasons similar to why they "worked on the passing game" vs. YSU.

Either way, expect Malcolm to continue to have a very low profile this Saturday. Akron is too well coached to challenge him.

4. Have MJ cover him 1-on-1 if he lines up on the wide side (field); but give safety help if he lines up on the other side (boundary). They can also mix up when they give safety help depending on offensive formation and down and distance, in order to make the coverages harder to read.

Please, spare us from the "poor baby" crap. From the time he got shifted to full-time corner, he was playing less and less on offense. It didn't seem to bother him throughout 2002 so I don't see how it would effect him near the end of 2003.

All I know is every time Jenkins was in on the play, he jumped up pretty fired up and the other players around him were responding. He's amped and ready to play and I'm lovin it.

If we can get JL and VG to show a little bit more fire this week the young guys will feed off of them and hopefully gel a little quicker. The loss of Wilson is going to hurt so I would like to see a bit more press coverage out of MJ and a blitz package or two installed. I guess we'll see as the weeks go on which way the D is going to be directed.

5. When we go to the Nickel package with MJ at safety, have him line up on Arthur's side of the field regardless of which side that is or the relative position of the TE.
