DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

I was just skimming through the Jacksonville Jags roster and realized something.... MJ reminds me A LOT of Rashean Mathis. Both are tough, physical, lockdown corners with similar size at 6'1" 200-205lbs. Thoughts? MJ should make somebody very happy next year on draft day. The Browns need some help in the secondary (See: Palmer, Carson - 6TDs in Week 2).

Jenkins has been a shutdown corner since his freshman year. Just another at tOSU. However, why are they playing him at nickel? It's clearly doesn't fit his talents. I hoped last week showed the staff that it doesn't work. I hope we have other options at the nickel. MJ needs to look a WR in the face and beat him for the entire play.

Given the results so far.. i dont feel comfortable questioning the staff's use of players.. we've been disgusting on defense so far... and i think they like Russell closer to the LOS and Malcolm free lancing at the safety position.. He did have a pick last week playing safety

Well, Jenkins had his first int of the year in the nickel which is why the staff put him there so I doubt that did anything to change their minds. He's a lockdown corner but he's also a ballhawk. Why not try to confuse the QB by using him both ways?

Plus we're probably trying to get the young guys like Chekwa as much PT as possible against opponents without a lights out receiver. I doubt Jenkins is doing anything but locking down the best receiver when we play a team that has someone that needs to be locked down.

I agree with getting other CBs some playing time. But while MJ got his first INT last week, some potentially critical gains were given up on his man. I think those gains are more likely to repeat themselves.

Trust me, I'm not doubting the defensive coaching staff as there's a lot to be excited about and little to criticize, but a well-functioning offense could give us problems in this nickel package.

not to mention we all know he will be a first round pick when he decides to turn pro...so giving him a chance playing safety further improves his draft stock because he can now play multiple positions thus making him more valuable...

He is back there, b/c it allows him to make more plays, b/c while he is a great cover guy, he truly has great skills in terms of stopping the run, and flying around and hitting people, and also it allows us to get Chekwa on the field who is a pretty good cover guy himself...

I know people have touched on this before, but I absolutely love the energy that Jenkins shows out there on the field. It is obvious that he absolutely loves to play football, and that there is no where in the world that he would rather be than on the field at Ohio Stadium. Even when he doesn't make a big defensive play (and he makes plenty), he is always there jumping around excitedly and pumping up the other players. And he is always trying to get the crowd into it. It is just awesome to see someone who loves to play for tOSU as much as Malcolm does.

JT is already working on scUM game plan. :wink2:

Accolades don't interest Jenkins

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Cornerback Malcolm Jenkins put the brakes on comparing this defense to great Ohio State defenses of the past.

The regular season is only half over, Jenkins said, as the Buckeyes turn toward Kent State.

"You know, last year we had a great defense, but nobody remembers that because we had two horrible games at the end," Jenkins said.

"So it's a long way before we can get compared to the great defenses at Ohio State."

At Purdue, the Buckeyes came within 10 seconds of recording their first shutout of the season, against an offense that entered the game averaging 45.4 points.

"That was a bummer," Jenkins said. "But once the game was over you get to thinking about holding an offense like that to seven points, and that's pretty unbelievable."

My job involves going to schools all throughout NW Ohio as well as NE Indiana. It happened to be cold today, and we happened to be in Marion, IN. I wore my Buckeye wind breaker, expecting a negative comment or two, yet only got 2 comments, both in favor of the Bucks. I guess when you hold a Purdue offense that averages 45 points to 7 for the game, and meanwhile Ntre Ame can't help but stumble to its first win in 6 tries, there isn't much to cheer about over there. Unless you consider Oden, Conley, Offutt, Larimore, Washington, etc... no wonder they hate the Bucks!

EDIT: What this post has to do with Malcolm Jenkins is anyone's guess, but DWash will be his replacement, and there-in lies the connection to Indiana. Bam. Sorry for the off topic.
