Chiefs notebook: Rookie cornerback Washington unable to come to camp

Cornerback Donald Washington, the Chiefs? fourth-round draft pick, remains unable to join the team until after the June 14 graduation ceremonies at Ohio State University, where Washington played three seasons.

NCAA rules prohibit underclassmen ? Washington was a junior in 2008 ? from joining NFL teams before their school?s commencement, and Ohio State?s ceremony is later than many schools.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said Friday that it leaves Washington, who was the only player missing on the first day of a three-day mandatory minicamp, at a disadvantage. While other rookies are adjusting to NFL speed and intensity, Washington is falling behind.

?It?s always been a bit of a juggling issue,? Haley said. ?I?ve been on plenty of teams that have had those guys. I?ve been the coach who has had to stay behind on vacation to work with a guy that has come in late. Not the best job, but it usually falls on the lower-rung guys. I?ve been there multiple times. Is it a hurdle? Yeah, it?s a hurdle for sure.?

Haley said coaches have been talking often with Washington about preparation, workouts and things he can do to reduce his learning curve when he finally joins the Chiefs.

Malcolm Jenkins joined the Saints after he completed his last final exam, so the wording in this article is inaccurate.

Washington cannot attend NFL practices because NCAA rules prevent underclassmen, which Washington was at Ohio State, from participating in NFL activities before his school's graduation ceremony. Ohio State graduation is next weekend.

JL, Freeman, Robo have already graduated so they have participated in all NFL practices.

Jenkins and Hartline worked out deals with their remaining classes to finish up early. They both attended mini-camps in the last week. But both will go back to tOSU for graduation next weekend.

D. Wash and Boone will both graduate next weekend and then will be allowed to particiapte in NFL camps.

Washington joins team --Rookie cornerback Donald Washington attended his first Chiefs practice Monday morning, two days after commencement ceremonies at Ohio State University.

Washington, the team's fourth-round pick, was an underclassman and couldn't attend NFL workouts before his school's graduation date, according to NCAA rules. Washington performed only individual work Monday, and Haley said coaches will keep a close eye on the cornerback to help him learn what he's missed.

"We will have somebody hanging with him to work and get him up to speed," Haley said. "We are going to catch him up in all areas."

Chiefs Ink Two Draft Picks, Another Is Close

The Chiefs have sliced their list of unsigned draft picks in half as they have reached deals with third-round DE Alex Magee and sixth-round WR Quinten Lawrence.

Still without contracts are first-round DE Tyson Jackson and fourth-round CB Donald Washington. A player must have a signed contract to participate in training camp.

Details on Magee?s deal are unknown, but Lawrence reportedly signed a three-year, $1.275 million deal with a signing bonus of $90,000.

It appears that they?ll have a deal done with Washington sometime today.

As the quantity and quality of news picks up around the NFL, we can be a little more selective with which rookie signings are worthy of a post.

If you have a name like Max Unger, you get one.

If you group three of your rookies together in one press release like the Chiefs did Thursday, we have a winner.

Third-round pick defensive end Alex Magee, fourth-round pick cornerback Donald Washington and its sixth-round draft pick wideout Quinten Lawrence all signed with the team Thursday.

Magee will be worked into the defensive line rotation as someone who can hold off blockers.
Washington has great physical skills, but is something of a project. Lawrence will get a chance to help on returns.

The Chiefs start their training camp Friday with a conditioning test.

-on a completely seperate note, what do you guys think of Donald Washington, and his chances of starting this year for KC? Didnt get to see him play too much last year, and as a Chiefs fan, I'm desperate to see some improvement and our D. Is he NFL-starting DB quality?

He has NFL starter talent for sure, but I'm not sure he's ready yet. He wasn't even a starter for Ohio State last year. Some off field trouble cost him the starting spot he had the year before, but he was given the chance to win it back and never did. He's got all the tools though.

Chiefs buzz: Team?s injury list is a long one

The Chiefs had one of the lengthiest injury lists of their preseason at practice Monday. In addition to quarterback Matt Cassel, seven players were missing: cornerback Brandon Flowers, safety Bernard Pollard, linebacker Zach Thomas, wide receivers Devard Darling and Amani Toomer, running back Kolby Smith and tight end Jake O?Connell.

All but Cassel and Darling were conditioning on a corner of the practice field while their teammates went through drills. Flowers had a shoulder heavily wrapped.

The presence of an injured player on the practice field usually indicates he isn?t expected to be out for long. So the absence of Darling, a starting receiver, was ominous.

He injured his knee during Saturday night?s loss to Seattle and is a candidate to go on the injured-reserve list.

Darling was replaced as the starter in practice by Mark Bradley. Rookie Donald Washington replaced Flowers, while Mike Brown stood in for Pollard.
