DB Donald Washington III (Official Thread)

Being short-handed at safety costs Chiefs
By KENT BABB
The Kansas City Star

DENVER | Sunday ended badly ? and it didn?t start all that well, either.

The Chiefs? defense had its worst day of 2010, and it didn?t help that Kansas City?s top two free safeties were injured and unable to play. Rookie Kendrick Lewis and veteran Jon McGraw were inactive, and without Reshard Langford playing, either, that left the Chiefs short-handed at a vulnerable position.

Donald Washington started at free safety, and Ricky Price, who was promoted Saturday from the practice squad, also played as the Broncos won 49-29.

?The guys that we had in, we had all the confidence in the world that they can compete,? Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr said. ?They fought hard. We fought hard as a team.?

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting so close to issuing a name-less injury report. If there are no injuries, do you issue an injury report? Maybe that's a question we'll find out later this year but not today.

The Chiefs have one name on their injury for Wednesday -- S Donald Washington. He has an ankle injury and did not practice. Washington has been on the injury report a few times in recent weeks for an ankle injury and was out last week against the Tennessee Titans.

Chiefs placed S Donald Washington (ankle) on injured reserve, ending his season.
The Chiefs head into the postseason as perhaps the healthiest team in the field. Washington, who sustained a late-season ankle injury, is the lone exception. The 2009 fourth-rounder is a reserve safety and special teamer.

The Chiefs have the most players of any NFL team returning to the classroom this off-season - Kendrick Lewis, Dexter McCluster and Donald Washington are all scheduled to complete degrees

Two years removed from his playing days at Ohio State University, Donald Washington walks across the Columbus, Ohio campus. It?s the middle of the NFL Combine and nine Buckeyes have traveled to Indianapolis to undergo the same NFL interview process that Washington experienced in 2009.

LB Ross Homan, a three-year starter and team captain at Ohio State, is one of the nine going through combine drills. When approached at Lucas Oil Stadium, Homan says that he?s already seen Washington on campus and knows why his former teammate has returned.
McCluster and Washington are back to complete their college degrees. Joined by Kendrick Lewis, who is finishing his final six hours at Ole Miss via an online class in New Orleans, the trio will soon form the Chiefs graduating class of 2011.

That?s where Chiefs Director of Player Development Katie Douglass comes into the picture. She?s on staff not only to assist players in making a positive contribution to the Chiefs and to the NFL, but also to help prepare athletes for a successful post-NFL career as well.

This off-season, Douglass has worked closely with players and representatives from university support staffs. At Ohio State, she?s found a strong system already in place, led by Director of Player Development Stan Jefferson.

It?s Jefferson and other staff members that will help guide Washington through his final credit hours.

?I had lunch with Donald just a few weeks ago and his main thing is that he wanted to come back and finish, just like anything else,? Jefferson said. ?His attitude was great and he wanted to finish the fact that he wanted that degree.?

Washington left Ohio State with a year of football eligibility remaining, but just five hours shy of obtaining his degree. He actually participated in graduation ceremonies before leaving campus with the expectation of finishing his final course shortly afterward.

?Finishing college is about finishing what you started,? Washington said. ?It?s something that I believe in and that my family believes in.?

Washington?s final five hours will be served through an internship within the Ohio State media relations office. He is working directly for Director of Football Communications Shelly Poe to study a number of skills that are both relevant as a player today and in the future as well.

?The internship will last a total of 120 hours,? Washington said. ?Right now I?ve done a lot of shadowing with media people and just trying to get the feel for conducting interviews. You know, it?s a different perspective than being interviewed as a player. I?m learning how people prepare for the interviews and why they are asking the questions the way that they are.

?I?m also going to be doing some things for the website and writing about some of the players as well.?

Additionally, Washington must also perform 50 hours of community while on campus. Its part of a degree completion program offered at Ohio State that allows lettermen from any sport to finish their degree free of charge.

Chiefs? Donald Washington Nervous Lockout Will Drag On
By Chuck Carroll
FNN Staff Writer
July 12, 2011

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Donald Washington is enjoying his free time during the lockout, but is ready to get back to work. He?s also nervous about the timetable for getting everything done.

Washington joined Jay Richardson and I on Tuesday?s broadcast of the JRich Report to discuss his offseason, the Chiefs 2010 season, their outlook for 2011 and Ohio State where the two were teammates.

Here is a little of what Washington had to say.

On time off during lockout

Honestly, it?s been nice and relaxing. I ended the year on an injury so I needed a little time to get myself back healthy. But other than that, I?ve been able to spend time with my family, time that I usually don?t get when we?re having OTA?s and things like that. . . taking a couple of vacations here and there. The last couple of months I?ve been hitting the weight room and running pretty hard. It worked out pretty good for me.

Jay Richardson?s follow-up

That?s what I was telling people. A lot of the guys, especially the guys who are vets in the league . . . As much as we want to play football, don?t get me wrong, everybody wants to be back on the field playing and be back to work?but for a lot of the guys it was kind of nice to have really a couple of months where you could rest your body, spend some time with your family and not have all those offseason obligations that can sometimes wear on you. Especially guys who are coming off injuries and now you?re talking about kind of being pressured back into workouts and OTAs by coaches sometimes and not to have that pressure to be able to relax a little bit it?s kind of nice. Now, it being a lockout, eventually it?s going to be some financial pressure on some guys.

On the timing of the lockout

I?m hoping they can get it done within that 7 ? 10 day span just so we can get into camp on time. . . I think it?ll be good to be back in that team mode. Get back to team bonding. . . My gut, I?m still kind of nervous about it. I feel like they?ve been saying ?This is a big week. This is a big week. This is a big week? for the last three or four weeks. Until something actually gets done I don?t think we can get too comfortable or put all our eggs in saying this things about to get done any day now. I feel like every week they?ve been saying, ?this is a big week,? and here we are 120 days into the lockout.

On whether the Chiefs can repeat as AFC West Champions

I don?t want to sit here and put any pressure on myself or our team. You know, we got the core of our team coming back. We had a little bit of success last year. You know, I just think we?ll take it one game at a time. But we?ll be a very competitive team and we?ll try to keep the thing rolling. There?s a chance we can repeat, but I don?t want to make any guarantees.

THE DAILY BATTLE
The Chiefs will have some difficult roster decisions at safety. After starters Berry and Kendrick Lewis and top substitute McGraw, three players ? Sabby Piscitelli, Reshard Langford and Donald Washington ? are battling for one or perhaps two roster spots. How the three fare on special teams could determine the winner. Piscitelli, a former starter with Tampa Bay, has the most experience, but that may not matter.

Safeties
?Sure things: Eric Berry, Kendrick Lewis, Jon McGraw.

?Less sure: Sabby Piscitelli, Donald Washington, Reshard Langford.

At other spots, roster decisions could be based on the better special-teams player and not necessarily the best player at a given position.

?It will have a big role,? said reserve safety Donald Washington, another player who could stick because of his play on special teams. ?Guys who can play special teams and play defense will have a better shot to make it.?

Competition is intense at safety, where veterans Jon McGraw and Sabby Piscitelli and youthful Donald Washington and Reshard Langford are vying for spots behind starters Eric Berry and Kendick Lewis. McGraw is a versatile player who helps on special teams as well as in some of their sub packages and is close to a lock to make the roster. Langford is the biggest hitter of the bunch, which could help his cause.

Special teams play will help determine who gets the other roster spots at safety. Washington may have the edge there .

Donald Washington, who left Ohio State following his junior season, also has his diploma in hand after completing an internship for the final credits toward a Journalism Degree.

?I was shadowing Shelly Poe, who is in charge of media relations for the football team,? Washington said of the internship. ?It was during spring football, so a lot was going on around the football team.

?I would go to the interview sessions and watch how the interviewer conducted and prepared for the interview. Being the one always being interviewed, seeing how it all happens and is prepared for, from a different perspective, was really interesting.?

Washington also helped coordinate team picture days for the football and women?s soccer programs.

?Shelly also gave me a list of projects to do dealing with statistics research for the football team,? Washington said. ?I?m finished with everything, but I?m planning on going back to do some more work in the offseason just to be around that environment and learn more. Not necessarily for credit, but I just want to stay around it as much as I can so I?m prepared for whenever football is over.?

DOWN TO FOUR
Without Pro Bowler Eric Berry, who has been lost for the rest of the year, the Chiefs? active roster isn?t exactly flush with safeties.

Kendrick Lewis: Promising second-year guy out of Ole Miss; selected in fifth round of 2010 draft.

Jon McGraw: This 10-year veteran out of Kansas State will get a major jump in playing time going forward.

Sabby Piscitelli: Newcomer to Chiefs had four years in the league with Tampa Bay and Cleveland.

Donald Washington: Fourth-round pick out of Ohio State in 2009 is listed as safety/cornerback.

Jon McGraw suffered a shoulder injury in the second half of Monday night?s game and was held out of practice Wednesday afternoon. In his place for the majority of the fourth quarter and overtime was third-year pro Donald Washington.

Washington previously drew a start in place of an injured McGraw (shin) vs. Minnesota and has seen his overall snap count increase dramatically throughout the past month.
