THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
CHICAGO -- Ohio State coach Jim Tressel yesterday would not confirm the rumor that starting cornerback Donald Washington will have to sit out some early in the season after breaking unspecified team rules in the spring, but he did indicate Washington faces further jeopardy.
"I can't say much, but he's working hard ? to get his 'car keys' back," Tressel said to the media before the Big Ten kickoff luncheon.
In Ohio State's preseason media guide, Chimdi Chekwa, who played corner in the nickel defense last year, is listed as the starter, with Washington as the backup.
"I'm not sure what it is from a coaching standpoint. I'm not sure whether (Washington) is going to miss a few games or start," said senior cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, who starts on the other side.. "I know whatever it is, he's going to make an impact whenever he gets in there

Ohio State football: Washington, O'Neal suspended for first two games
Posted by Doug Lesmerises August 07, 2008 20:02PM

Ohio State defensive backs Donald Washington and Jamario O'Neal are both suspended for the first two games of the season. Both players confirmed their status this evening after months of speculation dating back to off-field matters in the spring.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel had been vague about their punishment, but on Monday promised a resolution in the coming days. With all the Buckeye players available to the media today on team photo day, both players talked their status without disclosing exactly why they are in trouble.

Washington, a junior, is a starting cornerback, while O'Neal, a senior, had been in contention this spring to be the nickelback on passing downs.

Washington delivers veto

Cornerback Donald Washington is slowly working his way back into more playing time after having been suspended from the first two games this season for breaking an unspecified team rule.
He delivered his first big play of the season with an interception deep in Ohio State territory that he returned 34 yards to the Buckeyes 48-yard line in the second quarter.
"Any time you can come in and make a play for your team, it felt real good," Washington said.
The starter at corner last year, he still hasn't moved Chimdi Chekwa out of the starting lineup this season, but he said he feels like he is getting back in the swing.

I dont see him getting it back. He and chekwa will be a nice pair next year.

I agree. IMO, He may get deemed "starter" at some time, but he will be splitting time for the remainder of the season, unless an injury happens. I think he's a great corner, but Tress has always done a great job of staying deep in the defensive backs column. He also sets younger guys up for the following season by getting them in early during scrub time and pulling out a seasoned vet to take a break for a few plays. But again, as long as Washington keeps his fire lit, he can be assured of getting alot of reps and likely a starting position next year.
