Christian Bryant to OSU
Tuesday, January 26, 2010
By: Stephen Spiewak

Glenville (Cleveland, Ohio) corner back Christian Bryant verbally committed to Ohio State today according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

After missing on Glenville two-way star Latwan Anderson, landing Bryant is a big addition for Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes.

Bryant made 57 tackles and intercepted three passes, helping to lead Glenville to the Division 1 state final game, where the Tarblooders were upset by Davidson (Hilliard, Ohio) 16-15.

With Bryant's commitment, the strength of the Glenville-to-Ohio State pipeline is once again demonstrated. The Buckeyes will return to Glenville in 2011, where they could attempt to land several promising recruits, including Aundrey Walker, Shane Wynn, Andre Sturdivant, and Cardale Jones.

"My final decision I had to think about not only myself, but my family," Bryant said. "In my heart (Ohio State) is where I wanted to to the next four years. I had a stronger vibe there."

"I want to thank my mom and dad for being here the entire recruiting process," he said. "It had its ups and downs, but it was great. My mom and dad both played a big role in this."

"I talked to Coach Johnson," Bryant said. "He's talking about (playing) corner."

Kurelic's Comment: After seeing Glenville defensive back Latwan Anderson select West Virginia earlier this month, it was very important the Buckeyes land Bryant. The Bucks now have a commitment from a safety in Chad Hagan, a cornerback in Bradley Roby, and a guy that will likely play cornerback, but could play either position for the Scarlet and Gray in Bryant.

Glenville Signing Day stop: Christian Bryant says he'll try to recruit Latwan Anderson to Ohio State University
Bob Fortuna, The Plain Dealer, February 03, 2010

Cleveland, Ohio - Now that Glenville senior Latwan Anderson is back in the recruiting game after deciding not to sign with West Virginia today, Tarblooders classmate Christian Bryant said he's going to put the squeeze on Anderson to join him at Ohio State.

Anderson is considering Ohio State, Southern California and West Virginia.

"I'll talk to [Latwan] a little bit," Bryant said with a grin. "I've got to. I'm a Buckeye now and I want him to be one, too."

Ohio State on Glenville defensive back and new Buckeye Christian Bryant: Video
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
February 04, 2010

Ohio State assistant coach Taver Johnson was tasked with talking about Glenville defensive back Christian Bryant during the Buckeyes' National Signing Day news conference on Wednesday.

Bryant seems to have most of the skills that Johnson, the Buckeyes' cornerbacks coach, said he's looking for in a cornerback prospect.

"You're looking for a guy that is fast, that has great hips, is smart, physical and has great ball skills. And is just mean," Johnson said with a smile.

Johnson said Bryant has both the ability to cover and to tackle.

"He'll have to learn to cover some bigger receivers," Johnson said. "But we want him to do both, for sure."

Filling the Need: Bucks Snag Pair of Contrasting Cornerbacks
By Brandon Castel
Last updated: 02/04/2010 6:07 PM

...
One of those needs was the cornerback position, which Tressel called one of the hardest positions to project at the college level. OSU cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson said the Buckeyes were looking for guys that are fast, smart and physical with great hips and great ball skills.

They landed two players who fit those requirements in the class of 2010, although Christian Bryant and Bradley Roby could not have come under more contrasting circumstances.

One of the top-rated corners in the country, and a U.S. Army All-American, Bryant was on just about everyone?s radar from the very start. It wasn?t until midway through the process, however, that things started to heat up for Roby.

Bryant Hoping to Live Up to Hype in North-South Game
By Brandon Castel

North South Football GameCOLUMBUS? As he walked into practice Wednesday, Christian Bryant couldn?t help but reach down to touch the turf. It was just a football field, not much different than any other Bryant had played on during his time at Glenville High School, but there was something different about standing in the Horseshoe.

?It?s great being here for the first time (as a player),? said Bryant, a high school senior who signed with the Buckeyes in February.

?Just touching the turf, knowing I?ll be playing here next year. There?s going to be a lot going through my head through these couple days.?

One of the top-rated cornerbacks in the country, Bryant is in Columbus for the 65th edition of Ohio?s North-South all-star game to be played at Ohio Stadium Friday (7 p.m. ET) on the eve of Ohio State?s annual Scarlet and Gray spring game. Although he has been to the stadium before during his recruitment, this will be his first opportunity step foot between the lines as a player.

?It?s going to be crazy, the fans going wild. It?s going to be my first experience around this type of crowd,? Bryant said of a game that could draw 20 or 30 thousand fans to the ?Shoe for the first Friday night version of the North-South game.

ON CHRISTIAN BRYANT...

One of the biggest names in the game, Bryant had an up and down night for the North. He didn?t get burned for any of the South?s big plays, but also didn?t make many big plays. His biggest play did come in the end zone when he broke up a pass intended for tight end Alex Welch (Notre Dame) on third down.

He wasn?t very impressive as a return man, not because he lacks the speed and athleticism but more because of the way he approaches the whole process. He comes across as a maverick back there. On the first punt of the game, Bryant scooped a ball that bounced inside the 15 yard line despite the fact there were players from both teams all around. He did it again later, scooping up a ball that he had no business trying to field and then there?s the matter of the way he carries it. Talk about a loaf of bread, Bryant holds that thing out almost like he?s enticing defenders to go for the ball so he can pull it back and take off the other way. That?s not going to be tolerated at the college level.

Lastly Bryant did make some nice tackles, showing good pursuit and effort, but he was ejected late in the game for throwing the ball back to the ref with what was deemed too much velocity.

Christian Bryant, CB/WR Glenville (Ohio State)

Bryant was probably the best player on the field Saturday night. He was only challenged once on defense in the first half, which came on a deep throw late in the second quarter, and he stayed with his man step for step as the ball fell incomplete. Most of the night, the quarterbacks never even looked his way.

He did have an interception late in the game that was waved off because he was called for pass interference while he and the receiver were battling for a jump ball. He was also strong against the run, and showed a nice open-field tackle on a scrambling quarterback.

But it wasn't just defense where he excelled, because he caught quite a few balls (6 receptions for 47 yards) in the game as well?including the game-winning touchdown. He was very elusive as a slot receiver and became one of quarterback Mark Myers' go-to receivers as the game wore on. Exhausted towards the latter stages of the game, Bryant had to dig down in order to come through for his teammates at the end.

?I was beat, but I knew I had to suck it up for the team,? he said. ?They were all telling me that they needed me, and I just wanted to go out there and contribute to the team so that we could tie the series up at 9-9, and that's what we did.?

Even though he caught the game-winning touchdown, the week's events off the field seemed to excite Bryant even more.

?This experience was mind blowing,? he admitted. ?Just having our buddies?the special needs children, it was a really good experience for me. I loved it. It was a humbling experience. I wouldn't trade it for the world.?

?I will remember this for the rest of my life.?
