DB Christian Bryant (Official Thread)

On a day where we didnt play as well as we have recently, he looked great. He's better in coverage than tyler, he can also hit too.

I will say that Christian looked pretty good, but I have no idea how you can say that he is better in coverage than Tyler after only one game and against a team that threw the ball only 20 times in heavy winds with a freshman QB.

He will get plenty of chances to improve his game, but he has enormous shoes to fill if Tyler is out for any extended period.

'I think I stepped up pretty good,' Moeller's replacement says

The Columbus Dispatch

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- When Ohio State nickel back Tyler Moeller went out with what's thought to be a torn chest muscle in the first quarter today against Illinois, freshman Christian Bryant was prepared.

"It was great, just hearing my number being called," Bryant said. "I was ready for my name to be called the whole game. Tyler just happened to go down, and I had to step up."

As for how Bryant performed, coaches will review the game and grade his performance, but after the defense delivered several key stops in the second half of a 24-13 win, he offered a preliminary take.

"I had to step in and do the job the coaches were telling me to do, and I think I stepped up pretty good," Bryant said.

Coach Jim Tressel wasn't sure of the severity of the injury to Moeller, who spent the rest of the game on the sideline but clearly was not moving his left arm.

Seeing Bryant go in and play brought a smile to fellow freshman Johnathan Hankins. At 335 pounds, Hankins has had an increasing role on the defensive line, playing a half or more against Illinois. But since the first game, he said, Bryant has been in his face on the sideline, urging him onward.

"He's always talking to me, 'Get it up, get ready,'" Hankins said. "He's always the excited one."

But against Illinois, they were in the fray together.

"I had to grow up," said Bryant, who tied for fifth on the Buckeyes with five tackles. "(Safety) Orhian Johnson was telling me throughout, 'You're a grown man now,' so I had to step up. I had to leave a little kid game. I had to grow to be a man."

He was recruited as a corner, tyler used to be a linebacker.

That's all you're basing it on? Have you seen some of the plays Tyler's made in pass coverage this year? He nearly had 2 int's vs EMU last week. Bryant is a good'n but he has GIANT shoes to fill if Tyler is really out for the season.

It is clear the young man has a ton of talent and will be a great one at OSU..... having said that Tyler has been playing lights out and hope not only for his well being and the for football reasons he is ok.

Agreed with the other comment. I do not care where he was "recruited," Tyler flat out found the ball both against the run and against the pass. Not saying Christian won't get there (he appears to have a knack for getting to the ball and also seems to be a quick learner), I am just saying there is no way he is that good at this point. Hopefully he can get up to speed quickly since signs are pointing to a season-ending injury for Tyler.

Time to step up youngin' (He's probably only a year younger than me :), but in terms of OSU football he's definitely a youngin')

Gotta grow up fast...

This isn't specifically about Bryant, he's very talented, but it's hard not to be worried about our secondary...

You can usually just judge a young kid by the "it" factor. This kid seems to have "it". Reminds me of how I felt about how Mike Doss played when he was a freshman. Great players always seem to find their way around the ball, and be involved in a lot of plays. I could be wrong, but I think Bryant could be a HUGE contributor to this defense in the 2nd half of the season.

Tell me if I'm crazy or not, but I saw a little bit of a young Mike Doss out there when I watched Christian...long way to go to reach that status, but he showed a lot of potential...
