Dayton Flyers (Official Thread)

This is overly optimistic with respect to Dayton. I think if the two teams played again this year, the result would be very similar to the NIT game last year--close for a half, with OSU taking advantage of its size down low in the second half and running away with it to the tune of a 10-20 point victory. Turner would have an absolute field day, as I haven't seen a Dayton player who could come close to stopping him when he has the ball. I'd also expect Lauderdale to have the success against Dayton that he enjoyed earlier in the season against smaller teams.

Lauderdale's a stiff and you guys know it... The guy's had 2 double digit points games and no games in double figures for rebounding... He's a decent shot blocker, but that's all he adds...
Don't act like we're a small team... Huelsman is 6-10 with muscle and Devin Searcy goes 6-10 has really upped his game this year... Both of them are very capable of playing with Lauderdale and Mullens... What hurt UD last year was Koufos's jumper, and I haven't seen either of the big men this year show consistent range... And we have several front-court bodies to absorb the fouls as well, so you're big-men had better be on from the FT line...
UD has guys like Marcus Johnson, Chris Johnson, and even Chris Wright that are capable of defending Evan Turner... They are all athletic and long and could give him trouble when putting the ball on the floor... He's tOSU's best player by a wide margin and it wouldn't be easy, but we can throw a lot of pressure his way...
With your rebounding troubles lately, tOSU would have to light it up from 3 in order to even come close to beating UD by the margin suggested... I told everyone before the year (DaytonBuck can vouch) that this Flyers team would be better without Brian Roberts, and that is the case... We're deep enough to wear you down and tough enough to battle at any position... Don't make the mistake of assuming that what happened last year would happen again this year...

This much is true. This team could defend tOSU. Huelsman played some superb defense on Blair from Pitt last season. I think the whole game would come down to Dayton getting easy points in transition and how well their half court offense was being executed.

Just another quick observation--UD has struggled in home games with far, far lesser opponents than OSU:

Wofford -- won by 2
George Mason -- won by 4
Miami (OH) -- won by 5
Fordham -- won by 1
St. Louis -- won by 1
Richmond -- won by 6

I see no justification, based on UD's past performance at home this season, for the proposition that UD would beat OSU in Dayton by 10+ points.

UD plays to their competition at home... Their best games have been against the best teams they've played... And with the way the arena would be for that game, it'd be very difficult for tOSU to win... Just ask Xavier... Or Pittsburgh from last year... The place changes when big teams come to play there...

Agreed... If we are able to run we'd wear tOSU down...

OK, so long as you don't make the mistake of assuming what happened last year wouldn't happen again this year. :wink2: With all due respect, I think you guys had a better team last year, with Roberts' scoring capabilities.

...you mean last year when you were all claiming that you were better than your record indicated due to the various injuries the team suffered?

Yep... But the thing that makes us a better team this year is our balance... Too many times we had a tendency to sit and watch or wait for BRob to create something... We never really pushed the envelope... BRob was a great half-court player, but he hindered a lot of the fast-break opportunities that we had as he didn't get out and run the greatest... At times his scoring ability has been missed, but this team has found other ways to win than relying on BRob to do it all...
Not to mention that we are better off with an added post presence in Devin Searcy (played a little last year, but has really asserted himself this year), with Chris Johnson over Andres Sandoval, everybody over Jimmie Binnie, and a bench that goes 11-12 guys deep routinely....

Dispatch

Some publicity for the Flyers from a Columbus paper:(

Brookhaven's Johnson has ability, willingness to learn
Thursday, February 19, 2009 3:19 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

The shot bounced off the rim and seemed destined for Xavier hands.
Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Dayton's Chris Johnson swooped in, and in one motion grabbed the rebound with both hands and slammed it through the basket.

It might have been the most spectacular moment in the Flyers' victory over Xavier last week, and the fact that it went for naught did nothing to diminish why Dayton believes it has something special in the Brookhaven graduate.

Johnson was called for an over-the-back foul, which Flyers coach Brian Gregory still couldn't believe after the game.

"I told a couple players they spoiled my top-10 SportsCenter play," Johnson said. "I was happy we won the game so I wasn't that worried about it."
