UV light does work to kill the virus on surfaces. The company I work for actually came up with a device to sterilize pre-worn masks etc. It's nothing more than an empty electical control panel box with UV lights inside on a timer.
Our normal scope of work is robotics and automation, so we had pretty much everything on hand in the shop. Had it tested and approved then made a bunch of them and donated them to local hospitals, fire stations, jails, etc. This was back when PPE was in extremely short supply last month. Just please disregard the absolutely stupid name the office staff came up with for it!

Warning! Shameless Promotion Ahead!

Very nice! I work with UV (all four bands) lamps all day, ever day in my work. The energies and intensities are fair amount greater than the UVC lamp Sylvania is putting out, but that's rather irrelevant aside from the time factor in the machine that you guys have set up. I dig that the irradiation messes with the DNA.

FWIW to the general public of BP, my employer is attempting to satisfy the "desires" of our end users by providing anti-*name your pathogen of choice* coatings.
The EPA has guidelines on what can be stated to the public. There's even documentation out there that states unequivocally that just because that coating is anti-**** doesn't mean squat-diddly for the person(s) coming in contact with it.
Nothing like snake oil selling, or in the modern parlance, marketing.

I'LL TAKE IT! These past few months have been undeniably terrible, but I'm hopeful that this whole situation leaves behind at least couple of improvements to society.

For example:

Staying at home every day for two months – terrible. Ordering the occasional margarita to go while I spend every day at home – very good.

What's the logic jump from "UV light is being used to kill germs on a bus" to "Go the fuck outside"?

I assume you are aware that the sun produces a broad spectrum of UV light. Possibly a stupid assumption on my part.

Hawaii has been fortunate enough to have one of the lowest per-capita rates of cases and deaths due to COVID-19 in the country. One of the biggest factors is that we get as much daily sunshine as any place in the US, and people here get outside as much as they are able to. I've been posting for probably a month now about how people here have been out walking, jogging, and biking (and yes, many are surfing), virtually all of them without masks. Now, folks here are also extremely compliant with the in-store masks rules, which I'm sure is a significant factor, too. But the role that the constant sunny weather (along with warm temperatures) here has played in the extremely low numbers of cases and deaths simply cannot be ignored.

Northwestern's vitamin D study concludes the same....
