Perhaps our corporate overlords in all their Ayn Rand glory should have considered this before we packed up our manufacturing base and handed it to them wrapped in a ribbon.

No defense... but I also understand, first hand, how this happened... and it's seed is in the 50-70 yr old bracket.. like me
MBA classes in the late 70s and all the 80s.. INDOCTRINATED us with 'global economy'.. even computer software simulation games we used as part of our curriculum.. rewarded us for shipping production overseas to lower cost labor and less govt regulation... I bought it hook line and sinker... but I did learn... the end consumer dictates where production occurs...

If people strictly see goods basically as commodity they'll buy only on price... you have overseas production...
It will take a significant mindset change, to reverse this... and this absolutely could be the catalyst that fixes it

I agree with you. It was the Jack Welch cult of Shareholder Value Uber Alles. My Masters program at UofC had a lot of people doing joint degrees (law, MBA, MPA), those who would end up in Ph.D programs and those like me who stamped their two year Masters in International Relations and went into a government job. The joint MBA crowd thought and viewed things very differently than almost everyone else.

That was an exercise, not real life. Then again, what I've heard about what Chinese officials had done (teams in HAZMAT gear storming homes and physically dragging suspected infected people out and taking them away) makes the exercise look tame in comparison.
I don't think there are many that fail to appreciate the totalitarian extremes involved with their response.

Switch the topic to South Korea and that's different.

The large part of what was driving that indoctrination was American business in those years dealing with the crippling effect of high cost, unionized American labor.

Is COVID-19 going to somehow tame that beast if we want to onshore manufacturing again?

I don't think Rand would have supported the corporate overlords becoming so and staying so by buying a favorably tilted playing field from the government, which is what they've done. She'd support them being Darwinist greedy bastards, but not bailing them out when their excesses backfire.

I have no doubt about that.

The word is still "drivel"

Stop being divissive.

Interesting read...
Lupus is an autoimmune disease
The most common medication given to Lupus patients is Plaquenil (generic name Hydroxychloroquine)
It is known to be effective yet even the rheumatology profession readily admits it isn't sure why it works
It is a VERY common drug used to immunize against malaria
S Korea is using a mix of Hydroxychloroquine and zinc and finding it very effective for those diagnosed as positive !!!

Getting more legs.. red hot news today..
This would be a huge home run
This is a VERY safe drug.. virtually zero side effects....
Has been used by many millions - especially in malaria areas; or vacationers/workers going to malaria areas...
and been out there for decades
And cost is virtually nothing

The thrilling part is these possibilities are existing drugs, not vaccines that could maybe be streamlined quickly and available in December. Still too early but exciting.
