Cook, Conley, and Oden

Draft night brings goodbyes with its hellos

Just listen to Conley explain their friendship: "We're best friends, but it's kind of like having a girlfriend. In that first month, you are into it, buying flowers and dressing up and everything. But then it changes, and it's just ... you're both always there. When you are around someone a long time, you don't have to be nice. You don't have to dress up and impress. That's how it is with Greg. We're used to it. He's just always ... there."

This is what will be most different for Conley and Oden. After spending the bulk of their adolescence together -- Conley estimates they were never apart more than three days -- the two emerged from the draft with very different assignments. Oden was the No. 1 pick and is heading to Portland to be the anchor in the middle for a team that could compete for a championship within five years. Conley, the fourth pick, will be 2,300 miles southeast in Memphis, starting at point guard for a team that won a league-low 22 games last season. "Weird," Oden said. "We've been so close for so long. It's just going to be weird."

"Neither one of us is the type to get real emotional or anything," Oden said. "Plus, I don't think it has all really hit either one of us, what it is going to be like now. It's just weird that I will be in one place and Mike will be in another place, in another part of the country."

Oh, and isn't it refreshing that these three players feel such a bond to Thad Matta, Ohio State, and the fans that they want to come back to Columbus like this and continue their degrees.

Future recruits would be wise to listen to what these guys have to say. Enough said.

I've always enjoyed Greg Oden during interviews because he always come across in such a likeable way. I started reading his blog shortly after he was drafted and I have a new found respect/liking for him. He is humble, mature and a fun read. I find it a great way to keep up with what's going on with him and some of the other Ohio State players that he's still friends with.

The 3 of them hosted a BB camp @ Worthington Kilbourne last week. Being an employee of Mount Carmel (one of the primary sponsors), I was one of the lucky ones who was invited from our staff to attend the 3 day event. We provided mini-lecture series and medical assistance throughout the week along with a few of our doctors across the system. All 3 were great with the kids ranging from 5-18 yrs of age. It still amazes me how quiet and reserved Oden is. Conley is definately the most comfortable with a mic in front of his face. I was kind of suprised, but Cook was actually the most interactive with the kids, especially the young ones. Dunking over them, shooting long balls in the shooting drills (jumper still looks flat), just happy to be there having fun with the kids. Overall it was a great experience. There are some really good photos of the camp @ Impactactionphotos.com if anyone is interested.

Go Bucks.

It's so easy to focus on "What Could've Been" with these kids, but to read what they have to say and to see what they are doing makes me truly appreciate the fact that they gave me the most enjoyable 40 minutes of basketball in my life, albeit a loss.

Best of luck to all three, they represent "us" well.

Peace.

Buckeyes trio should have chosen school over NBA

By Greg Simms
Staff Writer

Already it seems so long ago. Ohio State's men's basketball team was at the top of the charts mainly because of center Greg Oden and guard Mike Conley of Indianapolis and Daequan Cook, a mutli-talented 6-foot-5 guard from Dunbar High School.
The Buckeyes sailed through the regular-season schedule and into the NCAA finals where they lost to Florida. Three more years of them and who knows to what heights Buckeye basketball might have risen.
But the super trio was on the one-year plan. The NCAA had recently ruled that incoming Division I freshmen had to stay in school for at least one season. So after filling that requirement, the three talents went straight to the pros, in style. Oden was the first pick of the 2007 draft, going to the Portland Trail Blazers. Conley went fourth to the Memphis Grizzlies and Cook 21st, to the Philadelphia 76ers who traded his rights to the Miami Heat.
