The Columbus Dispatch

The deadline for withdrawing from the NBA draft will pass Monday without former Ohio State players Daequan Cook and Mike Conley Jr. taking their names out.

Cook's former high school and AAU coach, Al Powell, said yesterday that Cook plans to sign a representation agreement with Mike Conley Sr. before Cook leaves Monday for Utah and the first of a series of workouts with teams that will run through next weekend. The draft is June 28.

Just heard Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News on the radio (1530 Cincy) and he had some strong words about Cook and Conley. He said Cook in the draft is a "joke" and Conley is "what is broken with the system." He explained that it is his belief that Cook appears to be looking to get paid for his potential which he will never live up to (doesn't think he has the work ethic). He doesn't think Conely is ready and that he explained that entering the draft wasn't even on his mind until he started showing up in mocks. He would have liked to have seen Conley develop his game and said he "might" be able to be a player in the watered down current NBA.

Don't shoot the messenger, just posting what I heard and the link to his page so you can tell him what you think.

I'd like to read what he had to say.! He might have it pegged exactly.

If I had to guess, which I don't, Decoursy may be right about Daequan going pro. The thing is that the guy was born to play basketball. Guess what he's going to be doing for a living? Playing basketball. A lot of people are bitter because DC is leaving. Ohio State is much better if he returns. If any of you or me could go pro in any sport we'd damn sure be gone just the same. If we take a second and back up and try and think from his point of view, most likely we're making the same decision. Cut the guy some slack. Enough people are telling him he'll be drafted so be proud of the time we had him at Ohio State. I for one, hope he kicks ass at the next level.:oh:

Bob Hunter commentary: No ifs, ands or buts: OSU hit jackpot with Oden, Conley

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

At times like these, the what-if factor looms large. What if Ron Lewis' shot had missed against Xavier in the NCAA Tournament, the Buckeyes had lost and Mike Conley Jr. had returned to Ohio State, as he said he would have this week?
What if Greg Oden had been so distraught about the loss to Xavier that he, too, would have returned? Oden didn't say he would have -- he probably knows, deep down, that common sense dictated he enter the NBA draft, no matter what -- but purely for the joy of speculation, let's say that he did.
What then?

OSU freshmen make history

Thanks to Oden, Conley, Cook, three selected from same school in first round for first time in NBA Draft

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

The atmosphere was different in the Ohio State basketball office Friday, since coach Thad Matta, two weeks removed from back surgery, was laid up at home after a trip to New York for the NBA Draft on Thursday.
But even without the frenetic Matta, there was a buzz.
``When I came in, one of the assistant coaches said, `I can't believe they didn't make more of a big deal of the first time a school had three freshmen selected in the first round. That may never happen again around here,' '' OSU assistant John Groce said. ``I took a step back and thought, `He's right. That's a special occasion.' ''

That headline should read 'three selected from Ohio State in first round for first time', since it's been done before by other schools, as the article states. And of course, Florida had 3 in the top 9 this year.

That was the first being referred to. I was thinking the same as you when I first read it.

Or 'Thanks to Oden, Conley, Cook, three FRESHMEN selected from same school in first round for first time in NBA Draft'. It was a joy watching these guys(Oden, Cook, Durant, Conley, ect), college basketball fans were blessed and we would not have had this oppurtunity if the 1 year college rule had not been passed.
