Okay, fair enough. It's not cool when people freak out like I am doing. But, in my defense, I have to said this: Just the insinuation of anybody claiming that their fan base (even though they might very well be #1 fan base in the entire NCAA) could outnumber LSU fans on any street in the State of Louisiana, --besides possibly the tourist street of Bourbon-- for the most important game in LSU's entire history, really, really, really disturbs me. That's all. Sorry for getting so riled up about it.
.....It's ok buddy, just having a little fun w/ ya.

I'll make a deal with you. If I hear of anyone else insinuating that OSU had a larger presence in New Orleans than LSU, I'll tell them that I heard LSU dominated the Quarter, and every other street in the state of Louisiana.

I can think of at least 2 fan bases worse of than [Florida] just in the SEC.

Two fan bases worse than Florida in the SEC???????? I'll guess you think Bama fans are worse that Florida fans based on your anti-Bama sig. As for the other fan base you can think of worse than Florida, is it Auburn or Ole Miss? When dealing with opponent fans, we all have a limited experience with the overall population of our opponent's fans (just like those who claim there were more OSU fans in the Quarter had a very limited experience of the whole Quarter).

Say some Buckeye person came to New Orleans for this game, and found that most of our fans that he met were very rude to him (I myself saw LSU fans being rude to Buckeye fans over this weekend, which I put a stop to). Our fans are not perfect, we have white trash as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were some Buckeyes out there who had an overall negative experience with LSU fans (we are passionate about football and we like to drink, you mix the two, and it can cause problems).

But, unlike my knowledge of the streets of the Quarter, I'm not overly informed about our opponent fan bases. It's just from the limited experiences I've had with our overall opponent fans bases that has shown that Florida fans are the most white trash in the SEC (and a lot of people agree).

As for Bama fans, I've never had a problem with them, not even when I am at Bama and we beat them down. I somehow have never seen a Bama fan act unclassy in my life (sure, I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I just haven't seen it).

As for Ole Miss, sure I've seen them do their whole "Go to HELLLLLLLLL LSU" chant over and over the presence of myself and other LSU fans, but that is all fun and games to me. I think it's pretty cool tradition. It's not like they stared us down when they said it (it was more of a traditional, general cheer, which is what I believe it really is). Other than a brawl between LSU fans and Ole Miss fans that almost broke at an Ole Miss bar, I've never personally seen an Ole Miss fan act unclassy (sure, I'm not saying it doesn't happen).

It's the same with Auburn, I've never personally seen an Auburn fan act unclassy (sure, I'm not saying it doesn't happen -- in fact, I've read some very unclassy comments by Auburn fans toward LSU on the internet in recent months).

But from my personal limited experience with opponent fans, behind Florida, the second-most unclassy fans I've had to deal with in my limited experience with overall opponent fan bases was Univ of Arizona fans in Tuscon.

P.S. Rereading my post here, I was thinking that the two fan bases worse that Florida to you might also include Tennessee and Georgia. I personally have very little personal experience with Tennessee or Georgia fans.

As I was walking by them, they broke out into a chant with that "the whole state of Michigan" chant... I stopped to listen to it, and they sang it twice. That was a really, really cool chant. Could any of you remind me what the full lyrics are?

Songs of The Ohio State University

We Don't Give a Damn for the Whole State of Michigan O, we don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan

We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan
The whole state of Michigan, the whole state of Michigan
We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, we're from Ohio
We're from Ohio...O-H
We're from Ohio...I-O
O, we don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan
The whole state of Michigan, the whole state of Michigan
We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, we're from Ohio

Strange. I have encountered animosity from LSU fans, but a large portion of it in my opinion is because we OWNED LSU for over a decade. Spurrier won in 1990, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 98, 99, 2000 and 2001. Lots of pissed off Tiggers. Add to it that we were your sole loss in your 2003 MNC year(beating you at home with a freshman quarterback) and it makes for hurt feelings.

The only place where drinks were thrown on me in the alum stands for simply sitting wearing UF colors is LSU. So whatever you or your friends think it is of little statistical import .....you see lots of nice people and lots of drunk assholes at every venue. This BCS game - for me - it was a Buck fan cursing the row I was on. In 06 at the Sugar it was an LSU fan who was so bad that the entire section of fans cheered when he was led away. But it only takes a few negative experiences at the same venue to leave a lasting image. I watched an entire game in Auburn where a fan yelled in my ear the whole game "GATOR HATER"....I got it after the first hundred times...really. And I've seen Gator fans very rude and drunk and had my car keyed in Tallahassee.

As I live in Louisiana, I have many great LSU friends. Those bad experiences with LSU fans do not get in the way of an overall friendhship or lead me to say that LSU fans are the unclassiest that I know, even though I've had many bad interactions.

So John, Vandy you probably have no problem with, but then, Vandy does not have bragging rights at your place. Like any thing, you have a perfect right to say it, but I question your methodology in determining the number of bad fans over good fans. Too much stuff goes into it to quantify, and the "bad blood" that can rise up (like your Saban issue) can lead to fan behavior that makes fan perception become reality.

That was a cool chant to listen to. My favorite part was how loud and proud they sang the "We're from Ohio...O-H, We're from Ohio...I-O" part in the middle. It was really cool.

I'm not saying that Florida fans aren't great people in real life, great fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, friends, countrymen, etc. I'm just saying when it comes to supporting their team, UF is the most unclassy fan base I've seen in the SEC, and it doesn't seem that surprising, being that they OWNED the SEC for over a decade under Spurrier. The only teams I know of that could compete with Spurrier's Florida teams were Miami and FSU (also known for arrogant fans). When you have such a dominate program for such a long time, its hard not to let it go to your head and act without class or humility when you are from a program that lacks a history of great football tradition like Florida, Miami, and FSU. With Nebraska fans, on the other hand, even when they had one of the most dominant programs in history under Osborne, they still had enough class to stay in their home stadium and give FSU (I believe it was) an ovation after FSU went to their house and upset them. That's because, unlike Florida fans, they actually have a history of great football tradition to be proud of.

In addition, Florida has that obnoxious "Oh-say-it's-great -- to be -- a Flor'da Gator" chant. When I first saw your sig on here, I thought that was poor taste on your part to use that obnoxious chant on your sig here on Buckeye Planet.

But sure, LSU doesn't have the classiest fans in the NCAA either, we are just classy in comparison to schools like Florida.

As for Ohio State, from what I saw of their fan base these last several days, they were extremely classy. I didn't see a single Buckeye that gave a negative impression.

Good guesses. In my experiences, Auburn has the worst. For whatever reason, whichever Auburn fans end up sitting in the same section as my seats, are always classless jerks. The ones I've encountered in and around the town of Opelika, Alabama are pretty much cut from the same cloth. Bama fans are a different kind altogether. They're more annoying than classless. I personally have never had any problems with anyone from Florida though. Nor have I ever witnessed anything more than good natured ribbing at LSU/Florida games. I'm well aware of their reputation, just disagree with it. Georgia has some GREAT fans. They are some of the best when they come to Baton Rouge.

Did you really HAVE to bring that up?

I have no problem with him bringing up Florida's dominance of the SEC during the 90's under Spurrier, especially since it was LSU that took down #1 Florida in 1997. It made the cover of Sports Illustrated with the caption: "See you later, Gators."

I'm sure LSU had a higher percentage of fans present ... its only logical based on the location and significance of the game. But we do travel real well and make our presence known. I have a feeling we showed up in bigger numbers than maybe a lot of LSU fans anticipated.

Once again congrats on the deserved win and title. I'm very glad that those Buckeyes that made the trip were good ambassadors for the school and community. As you can guess with as many students and alumni we have there are bound to be some asshats that when they get drunk run their mouths too much.

Oh yeah ... thats a favorite of mine as well. When you're in a swarm of OSU fans chanting like that it's just such an awesome feeling. I never really gave much thought to Ohio pride until I spent some years living elsewhere and meeting individuals from other regions. It was then that I realized how little the rest of the country understands what its like in Ohio. As far as many I have talked to were concerned, Ohio is nothing but stupid hicks and farmers. It was then that I also realized how happy I was to have been born and raised in Columbus. I love bringing my Chicago friends here for the first time and watching them react with surprise that Columbus is far more than they anticipated.

I was all over the Quarter all day Sunday, both day and night. LSU fans easily outnumbered OSU fans (at very least 66% to 33%). That would be insane to expect anything otherwise. The game was in New Orleans. But yes, OSU did "dominate" in the sense that they brought a hell of a lot of fans to New Orleans, but so did ND and Illinois for recent Sugar Bowls vs. LSU. And to be surprised at how many OSU, ND, and Illinois fans we had in New Orleans is crazy talk, especially when it comes to OSU. It's the largest university in the U.S. I mean just look how huge this Buckeye Planet site is compared to LSU sites.

Ohio State has over 425,000 living alumni (according to wikipedia).

Here is how other schools compare when it comes to number of living alumni:

350,000 -- Texas
300,000 -- Illinois
265,000 -- Penn State
264,437 -- Tennessee
258,595 -- Alabama
250,000 -- Florida
190,000 -- Georgia, Auburn, Florida State
150,000 -- LSU
112,000 -- Arkansas
85,000 -- Clemson

See The Collegiate Licensing Company : Institutions

As for Notre Dame, their fan base is legendary. How else could ND get a contract with NBC to televise every one of their home games?

Regardless, I do appreciate every single Buckeye who game down to visit New Orleans. That's the first thing I told every Buckeye that I met over these last several days. Thank y'all!!!!!!!
id seriously question these numbers, penn state has an alumni association of over 135k and has 80+k students at the schools and satelites.

needless to say for ohio state it is impressive to travel the way they do considering the recent trips to bcs games, 03,04,06,07,08 and three of those championship games in the past what six years? that to me is impressive, for a couple to go to nola for the weekend it takes two days off work and about 3 to 5 grand. thats not something to bat an eye at. think about that.

Yes, if OSU was like Illinois or ND, and rarely got a chance to go to major bowl games, then OSU would have showed up in full force in New Orleans like ND and Illinois did in previous years. But the fact that OSU fans showed up in comparative numbers to ND and Illinois fans shows how great OSU's fan base is, being that many Buckeyes spent thousands going to the BSC Championship Game last year, and couldn't afford to do it for a second year in a row, and being that OSU has gone to major bowl games for five out of the last six years (including a Title Game vs. Miami). I have no doubt that OSU probably has the #1 fan base in all of college football. The only schools I could imagine competing with them are ND and Michigan.

Thanks for the props, Time to return a few. Like everyone has said so far, the Ohio fans were well represented and classy fans.

I think there were 3 reasons for the continued attempts to score.

1. Keep the USC fan boys off our backs.
2. We let several teams back into games this year and it cost us.
3. Couple Beanie runs and you would have been back in it in no time...

Please take it as a badge of honor we weren't comfortable with a 2 point game.

I do not want to meet you next year under the same circumstances, the outcome would not be good for us. Hopefully some of our young tallent can perform as well as your "youth" has this year.
