Confirmed: UM's Turner did not graduate, now at TSUN

Unless UM has a way to admit people without obtaining a high school diploma, I am not sure how they would do this.

He could graduate without passing one section, but he would have had to miss less than 30 days (roughly 5% days) of high school through four years while meeting a whole bunch of other requirements.
ged, or one of those hs edu mills (i believe sullinger went through such a program on his was to arkansas)

Here is what I heard about Justin Turner's situation. I have a close relative who works as a teacher at Washington High School (Massillon). This person told me that it's possible that Justin Turner could graduate from Massillon without passing all parts of the OGTs if his IEP(Individual Education Plan) included a prior diagnosis of a particular learning disability. This diagnosis would have to be made by a school psychologist. My close relative didn't know if Turner actually graduated via this route or not, but simply mentioned it to me to reinforce the idea that, at least at Washington High School, one does not NECESSARILY have to receive passing scores on all parts of the OGTs in order to graduate.

Sounds plausible.

I just finished a half year of teaching IEP students and I gave the OGT testing for some of my High School's IEP students. If the student in question is classified as "IEP" he he/she is required to take the test but not required to pass ANY sections and still allowed to grad. as a normal student would. If he is still being held back due to the OGT test results then he is not under IEP status. One final note: If he is IEP then that explains why he could have a high grade one average but still find the OGT difficult, because they are still considerations for the student which is detailed and allowed in the unique nature of the students given IEP. But, the student still must answer each of the OGT questions on their own.

The only possible way I can think that he could be both IEP and still required to pass is if the nature of the IEP does not take any resideration of testing time/reading ability/cognitive issues/emotional concerns/etc... I have viewed several IEPs and many look close to the same. The exception might be, for example, a student with a physical disability but his/her cognitive ability is average or even advanced. This student would have no provision for the OGT just the accommodation for the testing site.

Here is the article from the Toledo Journal:

ZoomInfo Cached Page

He only passed 4 out of the 5 sections of the OGT and received his diploma through alternative criteria...back to the topic...

Thank you, and I thought I followed these things closely. The criteria was given in that article:

"Coming within 10 points of passing is among the criteria for reconsidering graduation eligibility, Mr. Gault noted.
Other requirements for ''alternative eligibility'' are passing four of the five tests, having a GPA of at least 2.5 in the subject area of the failed test, having 95 percent or better attendance, having no expulsions during the course of high school, and having no more than seven days of suspensions/unexcused absences during any one year."

All of those criteria should be known by the end of the school year...so if these kids met those criteria there shouldn't be any open questions about their diploma...meaning if Turner hit all of those..there would be no concerns/discussion about his retest...and actually...there would have been no reason for him to bother with the restest..he would already have his diploma and be set to enroll in the fall.

Speculative on my part...but the fact that he sat for the test again suggests to me that he doesn't meat the alternate criteria.

wow, that's some rumor - a school with the academic reputation of michigan admitting a student without a high school diploma
Michigan's admission standards for the general student population and for football players are completely unrelated. I would suspect that what's required by Michigan in this case is whatever is required by the NCAA. Nothing more, nothing less.

Which, up until recently, was completely disputed by Michigan fans.

I think this guy may have ended their dispute once and for all.

Here is some insider rumblings regarding Gallon and Turner:

Waiting on Gallon and Turner. both have one last chance. Gallon seems to need a point or two on his test and waiting on results on why he is not in Ann Arbor yet. Turner from what we were told he was taking summer classes to help his situation. He was one recruit that we though we needed to see in Ann Arbor early this summer since in our opinion he was a recruit that the coaches were counting on this fall. We keep hearing that right now he has a "certificate of graduation", but not a diploma.

Both of those players would be a huge loss if either does not make it in. We hope we answered all your questions ... lol.
