Confirmed: D. Washington, Clifford, O'Neal

I hate the idea of booting a 19 yr old off the squad due to smoking marijuana.. but Clifford and even Washington has really put Tressel in a bad position..

It's not the idea of them smoking marijuana that is disturbing; it's the idea of them not being mature enough to realize the opportunities that could've been. If this were the first time that they had done this, I would have an easier time agreeing with what I quoted (even then, they know the rules). But a second offense tells me that they are not willing to change their personal lives to help their team, and more importantly, their futures.

If they're not willing to change, they don't deserve to get another chance. Once is too much, twice is inexcusable.. and, unfortunately, I hope the punishment reflects this.

I know the rest of your post pretty much agrees with what I just said. I'm just elaborating, basically. Because I have a feeling people are going to think that the punishments are too harsh for marijuana (assuming all this is true, obviously).

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL INSIDER
Ohio State officials mum on status of three defensive backs

Saturday, April 12, 2008Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- While their teammates practiced Friday, they just ran.
Ohio State defensive backs Donald Washington, Jamario O'Neal and Eugene Clifford did not take part in drills or scrimmages at OSU practice, a potential indication that their availability for future games could be in doubt.
An Ohio State spokeswoman was aware of Internet reports of the three players potentially being suspended, but Shelly Poe said Friday the players are not suspended at the moment and said coach Jim Tressel chose not to speak with reporters.
@StoryAd
Assistant coach Darrell Hazell said Friday was the first time that the players were held out of practice. Asked why, he said, "Doing a little extra work today. That's about it right now. I'll let coach Tressel handle that one."
Tressel is scheduled to speak to reporters following this morning's jersey scrimmage.
Receiver Brian Hartline, one of two Buckeyes made available to speak to reporters, said the team had not been told anything specific about those three players, but seemed to indicate in other comments that disciplinary action was possible.

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

Ohio State defensive backs Donald Washington, Eugene Clifford and Jamario O'Neal did not take part in practice Friday, and it was not injury-related. Head Coach Jim Tressel did not address the issue. He is to meet with the media today after the Buckeye's jersey scrimmage. Wide receiver Brian Hartline did talk about the situation in general terms.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State defensive backs Donald Washington, Eugene Clifford and Jamario O'Neal were held out of practice yesterday for unspecified reasons. The three were running laps and doing other conditioning work while the Buckeyes practiced.
Coach Jim Tressel declined to comment through director of athletic communications Shelly Poe, who pointed out the players were not suspended, or they would not have been at practice.

Clearly, three are in trouble

Defensive backs Donald Washington, Eugene Clifford and Jamario O'Neal are in limbo right now, being held out of practice for unspecified reasons but also not officially suspended.
Wearing sweats and workout clothes, the trio ran laps and did other conditioning work while the Buckeyes practiced yesterday.
Assistant head coach Darrell Hazell would not comment, saying he would let coach Jim Tressel handle it. Through director of athletic communications Shelly Poe, Tressel declined comment. Poe did point out the players were not suspended, or they would not have been at practice.
This had to have come up very recently, as Washington was one of the players brought out for interviews on Tuesday, and safeties coach Paul Haynes was talking positively about Clifford and O'Neal that night, as well.

I understand why the university test's for performance drugs... I don't understand why the test for dope... The NCAA test's during bowl practice, other than that they seem to only test for performance drugs...

The three are stupid for possibly throwing away their 'ships and possible pro employment... this is dope, it is common in high school, let alone college... no need to jump off the deep end. I treat this the same as a 20 year old drinking a beer. It's illegal and I don't care (with that said, if I caught my children with dope, holy hell would rain for days!!). I don't have kids... not a problem I need to worry about for a few years :tongue2:

While I'm on the same page as far as the severity of dope use, I think the university test sure seems useful for trying to detect and let JT address problems now rather than letting them pop up solely during bowl season (which will happen sometimes anyway, like last year, it is true).

jersey scrimmage was today, yes?

(Asking as the only JT "quote" was mums the word yesterday).

EDIT - official site has some quotes from players / coaches - nothing on the DB trio.

At about 6:40 point in the Tressel audio, he's asked about the three defensive backs and states "sometimes you don't do what you're supposed to, you lose your car keys" When asked about the status for game time, he states "We'll see, it's a long time until then"

If he were planning to execute them in the morning he would have said pretty much the same thing.

my first thoughts- "gotta be fuckin' kidding me"

To me, Washington is the only one that hurts the Buckeyes. Sure Clifford and O'Neal are talents, but all we've heard about them for the past 3+ years is "potential." Potential means nothing if it isn't being put to use out on the field. Gene and Jamario haven't done anything noteworthy on the field, and weren't guaranteed to do anything special this year.

Washington, well, we knew what we were going to get with him. He was going to be a lockdown corner opposite of our other lockdown corner, Jenkins. Donald did a wonderful job last season and I was expecting the same this year. I liked knowing what we were getting with this D, now it leaves some questions, but only at a couple of DB spots, which the Buckeyes are stocked with talent at.

Bring on Amos and Scott and Coleman and Evege and Lane and Gant and Oliver...
