Confirmed: D. Washington, Clifford, O'Neal

From Bucknuts article Bucknuts.com - THE Independent Ohio State Sports Site
On Saturday, Clifford and O'Neal remained on the sidelines wearing yellow 'injury' jerseys. Washington was permitted to play, but he was seemingly relegated to third-team status.

"Well, sometimes when you don't do what you're supposed to do you lose your car keys," Tressel said. "That's as simple as I could put it."

When asked if it appeared Washington had been sent to the back of the pack at corner, Tressel replied, "That's pretty good. You were paying attention."

When asked if the players faced any suspensions in the fall, the coach said, "We'll see. It's a long time between now and then."

Another reporter pressed the issue later in Tressel's 20-minute press conference. His reply:

"It's like anything else. When things aren't like they should be, you lose privileges. You still get to work hard, but maybe on different things. When you repeat mistakes. whether it's on the field, off the field, in the classroom or wherever it happens to be, does it concern you? Absolutely."

When asked if those three players were still members of the team in good standing, Tressel said, "They're on the team, absolutely."

The coach was asked again if the players' conduct over the next several months would impact their status for the first couple of games.

"Everything they do will have an impact," he said.

I'd say that sounds pretty good as far as their status with the team. Washington was allowed to practice today, but in the back of the pack.

O'Neal and Clifford wore "injury" jerseys but when asked if they were still part of the team, Tressel said "absolutely".

It will be interesting to see what the exact punishments are.

Interesting that Washington was allowed to practice and O'Neal wasn't, considering it's Washington's second offense and O'Neal's first. Maybe things aren't as they seem.

I hope it's not because Washington is a starter. I'd be pretty disappointed if that were the case. But, time will tell.

I think it may be premature to speculate on the fairness and/or consistency of the "punishment" at his point, since the apparent offenses aren't known for certain, nor have the punishments been made public.

I recognize that your comments have a disclaimer. This is more of an attempt at preemptive action.

Nor do we have a clear picture of past offenses. We hear about this stuff when the media (of some blog or message board) gets wind of it. Who knows how much flies under the radar. We don't know apples from oranges.

It's definitely premature. If you knew me in person, you'd know that I'm very paranoid. And that's just an example of me being paranoid. :tongue2:

That being said, I need to not make comments like that.

Guys, just to support the other football mods. I'm sure that they all appreciate the restraint posters have shown. One of the things that distinguishes BP is that we do not bash players, ever.

Despite the source of information, Coach Tressel and the Ohio State football administration have NOT made it clear what these three players have done. Ohio State football has pointed out that they are NOT suspended. It is clear, however, that they are "in the doghouse" for some reason.

The allegation is that the players failed a drug test. This allegation may not be true. Let's refrain from comments that assume that it is in the absence of any official confirmation. And, if you are from a visiting team, you might enjoy the following thread, while you are here: http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/college-football/35914-police-legal-blotter.html

Man, in agreeance to everyone else, this certainly does hurt us. But at the same time, it is sweet as much as it is bitter. What do I mean? It shows recruits for the upcoming classes that yea, we may be deep at positions but ANYTHING can happen, and you will certainly have your chance to start on Saturdays, no matter how deep our secondary is.

Many prospects get scared to come to OSU because of the other talented 4-5 stars already lined up waiting to play, but now it looks like some players that may have been counted out will be able to earn some more Buckeye Leaves on their helmets just by continuing to work hard and stay motivated for their chance - and here is opportunity knocking.

BTW -For fans other than OSU, this may not have been the best analogy for JT to use, lol:

"Well, sometimes when you don't do what you're supposed to do you lose your car keys,"

At about 6:40 point in the Tressel audio, he's asked about the three defensive backs and states "sometimes you don't do what you're supposed to, you lose your car keys" When asked about the status for game time, he states "We'll see, it's a long time until then"

He's not actually equating drug use to losing your car keys, is he? Or am I totally whiffing on the interpretation of that statement?

Edit - ahhh. Perhaps he means if you break the rules, Dad will punish you. Sorry, I can be slow sometimes.

Great, now the scUM fans have their validation that OSU gives their players cars.
