Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

So am I wrong in thinking the back 4 is now the strongest part of the team? With Barson/Williams, Francis, Parkhurst and Gonzalez, it seems they would be crazy to do a 3 man back line now. So do they go with a 4-3-1-2 or a 4-2-3-1? Midfield after Higgy seems to be a weak point, but Arrieta and Oduro would look nice paired at the front, no? Trapp is a DM, the other spots are sketchy from what I see. Don't know anything about the GKs either. Seems like they've had a decent preseason though.

The keeps have been really good so far in the 2 games I saw against Toronto and Philly. Toronto liked to push the tempo and got a lot of shots on goal. Tonight's game against Orlando should be another tough one since they seem to like to push the issue as well. 3 until game time.

Columbus Crew play Sporting KC in the championship of the Disney tournament, and I believe it's the last preseason game before kicking off the season next week at DC. It's on ESPN 3 at 8PM.

Starting XI: Clark; Williams, Gonzalez, Parkhurst ©, Francis; Jimenez, Trapp, Tchani, Anor; Higuaín, Arrieta.

Looks like they will run a 4-1-3-2 or a 4-3-1-2 tonight.

Crew looked about as good as they'll look, and it's the last preseason game... Very promising game from the boys in black and gold.

They kicked off the scoring with an early PK from Jairo Arrieta in the first 25 minutes. They added a second goal when Hector Jiminez sent in a beautiful cross into Bernardo Anor for the header finish. Justin Meram added a third when he made a nice move to make the GK miss, leaving the goal wide open for the finish. Federio Higuain capped off Columbus' scoring tally with an absolutely nasty chip over the keepers head to make it 4-0.

Bieler got KC on the board off of a very nice volley from a cross in the 86th minute.

4-1 Columbus.

DC United next Sunday to start the MLS campaign.

I live in Cleveland and am a fan of soccer so figured I should get more in-depth on a certain team to follow....I used to follow lightly Portland last year because of their manager and Seattle a bit. Can someone tell me what rookies are expected to make an impact?

I'm jealous of the level of coverage that other teams around the league have in comparison to the Crew. This is a definite step backward.

This is a horrible deal for the fans and the Crew. Thankfully (in this instance only) I have TWC so I can watch. But I'd be livid, as many are, if I had direct TV or uverse, etc. Really takes the shine off of what was looking like a promising season. That said, I'll still be there March 22nd.

I'm not so sure any rookies will really emerge and blow people away like Wil Trapp did last year for the Crew. But one name to keep an eye on will be Kingsley Baiden.

As for the veterans, look for Giancarlo Gonzalez to really solidify that back like in a way the Crew haven't really had since 2008. They always had Chad Marshall, but seemed to struggle finding another CB to play alongside him. The midfield play should be what makes this team tick. With the addition of Hector Jiminez, they get a guy who can pass the ball to keep possession going and can also deliver the cross into the box. Higuain will do what Higuain does.

Supposedly Justin Meram (former scum kicker, lol) has turned the corner and should be a serious goal scoring threat this season as well.

Hope this helps out a bit.

Agreed, and I also have TWC. The only benefit I see is that now I should be able to watch on my iPad when my wife has the TV.
