Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

3-1 over Toronto FC here in Orlando for a little pre-season action.

I tried to watch my second preseason Crew match of the early season, and this is all I got:

For a league expanding at such a rapid rate, you would think with enough buzz surrounding it, they'd have some better feeds to work with.

I mean the Crew secured an FM RADIO deal this season.

It's difficult enough to WATCH the game, why would anyone want to listen to the game?

Anyone know what formation they are using this year? I mean I know it is preaseason, so stuff changes, but I am interested to know what kind of formation they might use during the season.

I've heard them throw out the idea of a three man back line, but I REALLY don't like that idea.

I want to say they were in a 4-1-3-2 when they played against Malmo FF a week or two ago. That would be the most ideal formation that I'd like to see them run. It allows Higuain to get his wingers involved, while not committing too much to your strikers. It gives Trapp a chance to develop in the defensive midfield, and allows the defensive line some space in front of them to move forward when needed. Francis will be that defensive player that will get up the pitch and get some crosses into the box. I'm really excited to see how his game translates to the MLS.

Jesus I could fill an entire thread of how much I HATE 3 man back lines :pissed:

I like the 4-1-3-2...I have always been a fan of at least one truly "defensive" midfielder. Higuain would then play the CM right? Where would Parkhurst ideally fit in?

I should say you'll have to forgive my ignorance...I've been away from the MLS for the past couple of years and I want to get back into it this year, especially with the Crew having a nice roster.

4-1-3-2 is one of my favorite formations. As long as the Crew have some pace to push down the wings, they will be able to score in this formation.

Higuain will play at the CM, but don't be too surprised to see him playing further forward and allowing Trapp the job of cleaning up the defensive midfield.

I would love for Parkhurst to be either the LB or RB for this squad. Everywhere I've seen him has him listed as a RB, not sure if he'd do well at LB, but it will most likely be huge step forward from Chad Barson and Tyson Wahl last year. I think this also gives Josh Williams the chance to move inside and be our #1 CB.

I've also heard there may still be a marquee transfer from the Crew sometime this season. I would shit myself if they stole Diskerud away from Rosenborg. But that's wishful thinking.

Thanks, that all makes sense. And yeah, that transfer would move some needles...even if it doesn't happen, I think Parkhurst will really be a boon for this team.

I agree. At the end of last season, I really wanted a USMNT player. Although just about everyone in Columbus would disagree with me, I wouldn't mind to see Eddie Johnson come over this way. But I don't think the Sounders would allow him to go to another MLS club unless it was some stupid transfer fee. I also don't know how he'd perform in Columbus. Since we're a "small market", the appeal isn't there for the premier USMNT players.

If I had my pick of USMNT players to come to Columbus, it would be in this order:

Mix Diskerud
Eddie Johnson
Herc Gomez

Love me some Eddie Johnson, I've always liked Eddie Johnson...but you're right, at this stage of MLS going to Columbus would be seen as a step backward by him I think. Gomez I hadn't thought of, but that would be great too.

I just really want Gomez out of Liga MX. That league is worse than the MLS from top to bottom. Of course, the top teams are generally better, but the mid to lower tier teams are terrible.
