Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

I don't like the feeling of helplessness in any situation and, as a Crew SC supporter, I am feeling helpless at the moment. There really isn't anything a fan can do if ownership (seemingly) has already made up its mind to do something.

A) Keep buying tickets, going to games and the team still moves.
B) Stop buying tickets and going to games and the team still moves.

The fact Anthony Precourt put a clause specifically stating Austin, Texas is telling.

At this point, I don't even know a Downtown Columbus stadium deal will matter, IMO, since he (Precourt) can put up Austin's stadium bid side-by-side and then it comes down to surrounding factors such as entertainment districts, apartments/condos, etc. (maybe even tax beaks and kickbacks).

I just hate how MLS puts franchises/owners over supporters sometimes, but that probably extends to all sports.

I just remember fighting with my dad and going to Crew games in Ohio Stadium and Crew Stadium and forgetting what we (my dad and I) were fighting about. Will always have those memories but, if the Crew move, it's something I cannot experience with my kids unless Columbus gets a new team.

I'm with you. There is no stadium here for them to play at, UT will not let anyone touch their field. There's no space downtown, and UT needs a new basketball arena so. It's cute but likely is a bad bluff

Just sayin': Texas also has 20,000-seat Mike A. Myers Stadium, where its soccer teams play home games.

Requires it approval. They don’t like to share

Admittedly, I skimmed (at best) the article you linked above, but isn't this (from that article) directly opposed to what you're saying?

University of Texas athletic director Mike Perrin indicated his school would be interested in such an arrangement. Myers Stadium has a capacity of 20,000 — in the ballpark for MLS — and alcohol sales are allowed.

“We are aware of MLS interest in Austin and have no opposition to exploring possible collaborative opportunities,” Perrin told the Statesman.

Yes you read that correctly they are open to the idea. Will MLS or Precourt pony up the cash they are likely to want at their terms will be another story. If a deal gets done I’ll be surprised because Tejas will want a lot of money. Oh and I can’t wait for attendance in that uncovered unshaded stadium during a weekend afternoon game in the summer  or even a week night during the summer

Column: Let them leave — Columbus will be fine without Crew SC

News broke Monday night of potential plans for the Columbus Crew to leave the city it has called home since 1996 if a new stadium is not produced within the next two years.

If you’re anything like me, your social media feeds have been flooded with strongly worded reactions to the announced tentative plans to relocate the team to Austin, Texas. Ranging from sadness to anger, no one is particularly pleased about the news.

Since the announcement, Crew owner Anthony Precourt has attempted damage control by hosting a teleconference with reporters to “clarify” his intent.

He said the announcement has been “misrepresented,” and his ownership team is just “exploring our options.”

I say let them leave.

This is a classic owner-exploits-city situation. It is as old as sport itself.

St. Louis did not cave to the pressures of NFL owner Stan Kroenke, and he took the Rams to Los Angeles, which I presume he wanted to do all along — whether or not the city succumbed to his requests.

Art Modell pulled the same stunt in the 1990s when he took the Browns out of Cleveland and moved them to Baltimore.

Like many who grew up in Columbus, I fondly remember yelling incoherent chants from the Nordecke while attending games early in the franchise’s tenure.

The Crew has maintained solid attendance figures as soccer grew in popularity and MLS attendance reached record heights.

Now, Precourt wants even more.

The Crew is headed to the playoffs with a hometown star in Wil Trapp. It was in the MLS Cup two years ago and won the league title in 2008.

Amid this success, Precourt has found a way to deflate that enthusiasm and take the attention away from soccer.

He wants a new stadium downtown — Franklinton, Arena District or wherever he might so choose. He has been thin on location details, but he won’t be happy until he gets what he wants.

Mapfre Stadium, the Crew’s current home, was built in 1999 as the first-ever soccer-specific venue in Major League Soccer. Located near the Ohio State Fairgrounds, it is by no means old or dilapidated.

Columbus should not give in to Precourt’s preposterous request.
