Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Columbus city officials need to make the business case and if that means goodbye, then goodbye. The demise of the Columbus Magic didn't hurt Columbus.
Now you're just being insulting. That's like if the blue jackets threatened to leave and saying, you know we were just fine when the chill left. And I'm really insulting the chill even at that level. Maybe the Ohio glory is a better example. It was here one year and no one cared. The Crew is a little different

I was doing my best to insult a rent-seeking manager who has a going business because Columbus gave him support and invested in the current arrangements. Over nearly 25 years, since building the first-ever US stadium made specifically for soccer, Columbus supported this team through thick and thin, filling the stands from the beginning and being a leader in average attendance for many years.

Maybe the attendance problem is due to crappy marketing by the team management? The threat to move is a shocking turn of affairs that deserves rejection.

Someone needs to respond to Anthony's tweet about the unfairness of a fan boycott because the Crew are on a championship run and not responsible for management decisions.

You don't get to do that. You already made up your mind. Did you really foolishly think Columbus fans would support you to the last moment and then stand tearfully watching you take the franchise they paid for into the sunset. Do you really think Austin will rally behind a product managed by someone like you? No. You want to engage in this behavior, then take the franchise and the financial and reputational losses with you.

As you say, this is a business decision. Why should fans make your move easy or lower its cost? There should be a total boycott and a clear message to highlight your extreme lack of respect for the fans and questionable business ethics.

Interesting report tonight. Crew owns MAPFRE stadium, but is under contract to pay the state an annual lease of $72,000/yr through 2023.

However, there is a provision in the lease that the Crew ownership would be in breech and liable for financial damages to the state if they terminate without finding another "professional sports franchise" to take over tenancy of the stadium.

How would Austin feel about taking Columbus' MLS team? It's complicated

Matthew Gray still remembers what it was like in late October 2010, when the news leaked that the Austin Aztex were planning a move to Orlando, Florida. Gray headed up Chantico's Army -- later renamed Eberly's Army -- the biggest Aztex supporters' group during their brief two-year tenure in USL Pro.

He scrambled to rally Aztex fans, but in the end it was a lost cause. Days later the Aztex left town, bound for central Florida, where the promise of a possible MLS future awaited.

Five years later, there was a disappointment all over again when the second version of the Aztex, established in 2012 as a Premier Development League team and later a USL team in 2015, had suspended operations.

"It brought back the emotions of October 2010 and also October 2015," Gray says. "My immediate reaction was, 'What about the Columbus fans?' I really wanted Austin to get an MLS team someday, but not in this way. It feels dirty. My mind knows this is a business, but my heart wonders if [Crew owner] Anthony Precourt is really an owner I want to support."
