Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Oh mylanta... What an amazing game to be at. Met Federico after the game, awesome dude. Asked him how he crushes those free kicks into the upper 90 like that.

As for the offense tonight:

Arrieta made his game winner look so effortless. Can't wait to watch the encore tomorrow night (well, I guess it'd be later tonight....). Apparently I was on TV , I have my Celtic bumble bee kit... Hard to miss me.

Columbus playing in Philadelphia tonight. The Union scored on a free kick just outside of the box. The kick deflected off the right side of the wall, and Lampson couldn't get to the ball in time.

The Crew respond with a goal of their own about 10 minutes later. Federico Higuain with a nice cross into the box to a waiting Josh Williams. Williams flicked the header into the goal to tie it 1-1 just before halftime.

One point earned, two points stolen. MASSIVE.

Higuain won the ball in the attacking end and held it up nicely until Meram could make a supporting run, who then found Gaven for the match winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time. WOW.

It wasn't very fun to watch this team at the start of the season. That has changed in a hurry since Higuain got here.

FIFY

I'm stoked to have both of these play makers on the squad!

Winning on the road... at night... down a man for almost half an hour. Unbelievable.

These guys believe. They are truly playing MASSIVE football right now and they are so much fun to watch. 2 points from the 5th and final playoff spot and 4 points from 3rd in the east. Get it, boys.

Columbus played Montreal tonight in a crucial battle for the last playoff spot at Crew Stadium. Montreal came into the game as MLS's hottest team with a 5-game winning streak. After a scoreless first half, both teams came away firing, with Montreal scoring first on a Marco Di Vaio chip around the 70th minute. The Crew responded with a set piece header by Chad Marshall about 10 minutes later and Emilio Renteria redirected a cross for the lead in stoppage time, both assisted by... you guessed it... Frederico Higuain. 2-1 Columbus final.

Columbus (42 points, 26 games played) currently sits in the 4th playoff spot, tied with 3rd place Houston in points (42) and games played, but Houston has the advantage in the first tie breaker (goal differential-- Houston is +8, Columbus is +3). We jumped Montreal (39 pts, 29 gp), Chicago (41 pts, 25 gp), and D.C. (41 pts, 27 gp) tonight. HUGE win. 8 games to go in the regular season for Columbus, who is now MLS's hottest team, riding a 6 game unbeaten streak and 4 game winning steak.

Another amazingly ridiculous game to be at! Federico just has another gear out there when it's time to score.

The dude is magic. Overheard some conversation between some folks with allegiances to other teams that have said no player has had such an immediate impact on an MLS team in the league's history like Frederico has. 3 goals, 6 assists, and a 6 game unbeaten streak for a team that was basically averaging a goal a game (or less) before his arrival.

The only other player I could think of was Brad Friedel in MLS's first season. I think we went on a 9-game winning streak to make the playoffs that year after Brad hopped in goal.

Can't wait to see him at Redbull Stadium in 2 weeks! I'm making the trip! It'll be my first time in NYC.

The gauntlet of 7 games in 22 days is finally over. The Crew won four, drew twice, and lost once. The Crew now have 10 days until their next match.

I'll gladly take one loss when having to play seven game in 22 days, but last night's match just sucked. First of all, fuck turf soccer. The bounces and skips caused by the turf completely screwed up any flow to play, and made the match very hard to watch. Second, Gruenebaum said that ultimately he should take the blame for Chad Marshall's own goal, and I'm not knowledgeable enough about this game to know who should've done what, but come on. If Marshall isn't closing his eyes before he heads the ball over Gruenebaum, then how the fuck did he not see the goalie coming toward him when they were facing each other? Awful, awful game to watch last night.

On a positive note. I love what the Crew have done since Higuain and Arrietta have been playing together. Gaven looks like a new man. A man that actually believes that his runs will result in chances. We just need to get Williams back at LB, and I think that we have a real shot at going deep into the playoffs.

Biggest problem facing the MLS right now.... I love the fact that the Sounders play at a venue like Qwest Field (I don't think it's called that anymore), but their turf fucking blows. Probably the bounciest turf in the MLS.

But I absolutely agree, it's fucking lame. The worst part is, the teams that play on it know what to expect so they play the bounces slightly better than the visitors. Oh well, none of this will be relevant when New England is watching the playoffs from their couches.

That OG was on Gruenebaum. It's up to the keeper to command the penalty area and communicate with the back line. 99.9% of the time, entire play is in front of a keeper and they should be able to see it.
