Rookie midfielder Kirk Urso died last night at the age of 22.
Uniformed police officers were dispatched to Park Street Patio at 533 Park St. at 12:50 a.m. Urso was transported from there to Grant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:51 a.m. The coroner's office is handling the investigation.
A statement issued by the Crew said the club will have no further comment while the circumstances of his passing are still being determined. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.
Urso was selected in the first round of the MLS supplemental draft. He saw action in six games including five starts but has been sidelined after undergoing surgery for right adductor tendonitis and has not been around the team much in recent weeks. The Crew played on the road last night against D.C. United. Urso did not make the trip and was back in Columbus. The Crew's reserve league match scheduled for today against D.C. has been canceled.
