Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

I don't know if SB Nation is considered a reliable source, but they're quoting Steven Goff of the Washington Post.

Columbus Crew Reportedly Sign Ben Speas To Homegrown Player Contract

Read More: Milovan Mirosevic (MIDFIELDER - Columbus Crew), Olman Vargas (F - Columbus Crew), Columbus Crew
One of the more under-the-radar stories of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft has been the saga of Columbus Crew academy product Ben Speas. The North Carolina junior is coming off a season in which he scored seven goals and had 10 assists and probably would have been seriously considered for a Generation Adidas contract if he had been unattached. When word leaked out that he was not enrolled in classes, speculation grew that he had signed with the Crew.
Now, the Washington Post's Steven Goff is reporting that is exactly what has happened:
Steven Goff @SoccerInsider
Yes. Done deal. RT @patricksp71: Has Ben Speas Signed with Crew?

8 Jan 12
Signing Speas would just be the latest move in what has been an impressively busy offseason for the Crew. Last week, they signed Chilean international Milovan Mirosevic and Olman Vargas out of Costa Rica. All three players could help bolster an attack that was not nearly potent enough.

Speculation is that the official announcement will come this week.

TITTIES!

I'm going to say it now... If the Crew don't at least make the Eastern Conf Finals, I'll be furious.

MLS Superdraft is tomorrow at Noon on ESPN or ESPN2 (can't remember which). So I decided to take a little time and list some players who I'd like the Crew to give a look to with the 10th pick.

Forward:

Since I believe Darren Mattocks will be the first forward selected, I'd love to see Chandler Hoffman drop down to 10th if the Crew were to go with another forward, isn't likely though.

Midfield:

Enzo Martinez and Luis Silva are both really talented midfielders but look for these guys to come off the board quick. If the Crew decide they need to add another attacking midfielder, give me one of four: Kelyn Rowe, Sam Garza (who can also play forward), Calum Mallace, or Kohei Yamada.

Kohei Yamada was a big standout at the combine. His stock may peak on draft day.

Back Line:

Although there isn't a HUGE need for back line, the Crew COULD use a LB. Give me one of two if that's the case, either Hunter Jumper or Mykell Bates.
With their second round pick, I fully expect a CDM or CB to add some depth.

Overall, the Crew already have a VERY solid Starting XI going into the 2012 season. That's NOT including a Designated Player. Add a BIG name, plus solid draft picks with ONE of the names above being the 10th pick, and you can consider me a VERY VERY happy Crew fan!

Last pick I update because I'm tired of seeing my own sig on this page.

The Crew select Ethan Finlay with the #10 pick.

Hmm... A forward. They say his stock went up at the Combine. Here's to hoping.

Here, I'll break up the monotony... you got a bio on this Finlay kid?

Trying to dig up some highlights of him. They said he showed up late to the combine and still scored a hat trick... Don't like his timeliness, but who am I to judge? I've never been on time to anything.
