Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Brutal is right. That was a tough game to watch. SWEET LORD we were terrible on D. You'd think that after this many games against his former boss, Warzycha would learn that Sigi is going to counter-attack the shit outta you. They WANT you to play a posession game against them, Bobby. Game plan for it and don't fall for that garbage. Geezy petes. No matter what happens with Houston and KC tonight, Columbus will still be in 1st place in the East, albeit by likely a small margin.

Cunningham ought to get a standing O at our next game. Congrats to Jeff!!! 134 goals. Outstanding.

And Gardner's golazo off of a free kick from downtown Columbus was the free kick goal I've seen from a player in a Crew kit it a loooooong time. Made me miss Guille. What a bomb. Easily goal of the year for Columbus thus far. I'd go as far as to say that could be a goal of the year candidate in MLS this season, but there have been 2-3 ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS goals this year that would win it in any other year... and two of them came from brand new expansion teams.

Darlington Nagbe's volley from outside the box has that topped IMO, just pure brilliance.

That's one! Here's the other (and my vote):

The tipping point for me is that he beat Kasey Keller with that. Just an unreal strike.

18.5 hours later, and I think that I'm finally able to articulate how I feel about last night's game.

[censored] Adam Moffat!!

Yeah, terrible red card. Didn't look too menacing in person, looked even more harmless on replay. EKPO PUTS HIS HEAD DOWN when he made contact with that douche Moffat's face. A yellow card AT WORST in the 9th minute. Maybe even a stern talking to. But I have noticed ever since Columbus climbed to first in the East, the refs have been less than favorable for the Crew.

I've noticed that ever since Warzycha got that contract extension the Crew have played like ass.

Agreed. The more I've watched the more I realize how many players just aren't fitting into Columbus' future. Sebas Miranda for one, MENDOZA is a given. I'd like to see Francis play a bit more at LB, he looked good against Houston shutting down the attack down the sideline. My favorite player on this team is Julius James. His work ethic, win or lose, is awesome. He brings a dynamic to the back line that I haven't seen much of from Columbus. Just glad he's a part of the team.

The playing like ass has also coincided with injuries to Gaven, Renteria, and Marshall, and suspensions to James, and Ekpo. Hopefully, we can get Gaven and Marshall back soon.

With the east being so terrible this year, I think that we only need three more points to solidify a playoff spot. That's pretty lucky, because, given our current form, I only see three points coming from our remaining five games. Maybe we can get everyone healthy in time to put together a playoff run, but I don't really see that happening.

Was Marshall out for Philly? If anything he's just banged up a bit. I know he played against Houston, and I honestly couldn't see him missing a game as big as LA, win or lose.

Eddie gave is absolutely missed though. The two spots Columbus need to strengthen is the attackers and the midfielders. It's Gaven and Ekpo in the midfield and I haven't been overly impressed by Ekpo's offensive play, but still plays solid D. Then for the attack, you have Mendoza who's playing too much despite his lack of work ethic, Heineman who gets his opportunities and makes the best of them, Renteria who's all hustle, and Cunningham who's an MLS all time great. Get rid of Mendoza and let's see what kind of chemistry is built between Heineman/Renteria/Cunningham. Renteria and Heineman already have some good chemistry built already.

Marshall didn't make the trip to Philly. Gehrig started in his place, and actually did OK, even though, IIRC, the Union's goal was due to a miscom between him and James.

Having Francis back at left back, and O'Rourke back a DM has been nice. I actually like Ekpo much better, offensively, now that he is in the center, and not on the wing. I'm usually pretty annoyed by Mendoza's work ethic, but I think that he seems fairly annoyed with the lack of class around him, and he's decided to just show up and collect a check. A combo of Heinemann and Renteria could be good, but Heinemann has almost no actual skill, IMO, except for the occasional knock down header.
