Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Bump for the Newcastle game tomorrow.

And don't look now, but the Crew are in first place in the Eastern Division after defeating Portland last weekend at home 1-0 :)

Biggest Crew Trade of the Year (thus far): Iro and Griffit to Toronto FC for Tony Tchani (pronounces his last name with a silent T). Traded two bench warmers for a young midfielder who could start for us. Tchani has two MLS goals to his name... both against us. 22 years old, 6'4", #2 overall pick in the 2010 MLS draft, Generation Adidas player (so his salary doesn't count against our cap). Because of his Generation Adidas tag, it also saved us about $100K in salary that we are supposedly going to use to sign a forward from South America with. Freakin' genius move. Kinda sucks to lose Iro, but to get Tchani, it makes us a better team. And luckily, we have about 3 or so folks that could play center back in a pinch due to our versatility. Can't believe Toronto was stupid enough to okay that trade. And they wonder why they haven't seen the playoffs since they joined MLS...

Guys are just starting to get off the injury bug here too. Hoping we can recooperate over the All-Star break this week. Julius James is back on the pitch, Emilio Renteria got some nice minutes last week, Francis is a game away from seeing the field, O'Rourke is working on his fitness but seems to be back to being healthy... though Mendoza and Hesmer sat out last game with injuries (both sounded minor/precautionary) and Tchani is recovering from an injury himself.

The Crew knocked off Salt Lake 2-0 this weekend AT Rio Tinto (!), despite injuries keeping 5 starters (+ Tony Tchani) from playing in the game. Robbie Rodgers decided to show up for the first 20 min of the game, assisting on both goals (both scored within the first 10 min of the game) to Eddie Gaven and Tommy Heineman. 1st win at Rio Tinto ever. Andy Gruenebaum earned his second shut-out in his second start of the season. 3 points ahead of Philadelphia (who lost to Colorado last week) and the rest of the pack in the East.

Next game is at Colorado on Friday, August 5th at 9:30pm.

Not exactly Crew news, but the city of Columbus has decided to shut down Hudson Street Hooligans.

Here is what the guy who runs the place had to say on Facebook:
The City has made it clear that they are unwilling to work with us in alleviating the issues they have with the building.

I would rather keep the formal details for those who can attend tonight. But the long and short of it is, the City Building
Department is unwilling to work with us and has shut our doors. The structural updates to the building they are requesting are in the tens of thousands, and the time line we would have to follow would have us closed for the rest of the season.

Sad news, but they should be able to get most of this resolved and be back open for game days in no time.

The Crew came back from a 1-0 halftime deficite, and hand New England their asses in the second half to win 3-1 and extend their lead in the east to 3 points.

Set-piece success lifts Crew to satisfying win

James buries Gardner's corner kick, Columbus keep rolling

COLUMBUS ? Josh Gardner proved to be more than adequate taking corner kicks for injured Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven.
In fact, Gardner was spot-on to help the Crew rally from a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat New England 3-1 in Crew Stadium on Saturday.

cont'd

I've been a big fan of James this season, and it seems like he is constantly in the heads of the opposition. The air that he got on his goal was just awesome.

Big match coming up next Saturday. Second place Philadelphia comes into Crew Stadium with newly signed Freddy Adu to add even more hype to the match. I'm definitely getting tickets this week!

Sad news. A member of La Turbina Amarillo (Hispanic supporters group) died in a motorcycle accident following the match.

 Must have happened just after we left to go to Hudson Street Hooligans. Very sad news indeed. I don't know if anything feels worse than tailgating with someone, enjoying some beers, and laughs before the game, and now that same person is gone.

Somehow snuck my way into this video. Either way, one of the new chants in the Nordecke that I happen to really like. It seemed to unite the entire section.

Gameday bump.

7:30 tonight at Crew Stadium -- our first place Crew hosts the 2nd place Philadelphia Union. A big six-point game that winning would put us firmly in control of 1st place in the east. Lose and we tie Philly in points with having played 1 more game than them.

If you want to see some good soccer tonight, head down to Crew Stadium. Should be a really good one.
