Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

sprinkling of responses from the last few pages

1-the cbj will make revenue, players are not paid during the playoffs, though a few veterans have incentives that kick in if they make the playoffs (peca). so basically tickes+food+beer+merchandise sales-arena expenses-travel expenses=playoff revenue. honestly i wouldnt expect a big spending spree.

playoff series are 2-2-1-1-1. games are played every other night. columbus starts at det on thursday.

cbj are 3-3-0 against the wings this year.

mike, no reason you cant catch atleast one game. you should be able to justify the cash for one game to go up 75 or over 70.

columbus needs to get back to checking, if they chase the puck, the wings win. if they play a tight checking game i think it can be done. traditionally teams dont do well in their first 2-3 playoff runs with new cores of their teams. though columbus core (nash, mason, hejda then you have juice, torres, commie, vermette, tyutin, umberger) has a decent amount of playoff experience.

picard has been recalled, he has played with his hair on fire of late. maybe the best player in the american league the last 2 or so months. with murray out for the year (likely) maybe plug him in? 22 goals, this year but most of those in the last month or so.

maybe more later, who knows.

oh expect a ton of recalls from cuse. mayorov, sesitito?, clitsome? holden?, lacosta, lalande, etc. id expect 4-7 more in addition to picard. no roster limit for the playoffs.

Truer words may never have been spoken. Even though I only watched a handful of games this season, there was a definite Jekyll and Hyde aspect to this team. If they dictated the pace by hitting and playing tight D, they looked like they could beat any team on any night. If they waited for the puck to come to them and spent half the game looking over their shoulders, Mason had to stand on his head to keep it close. One thing the Jackets need to address quickly is controlling the defensive slot. In all their losses down the stretch, opponents were teeing up between the circles like it was the all-star game skills competition. Holmstrom is going to be a big threat, as none of our D-men seem to be concerned about clearing out the front of the crease.

In order for the Jackets to have a chance, Mase is going to have to outplay Osgood every night. That's not too much of a stretch, but Mase is going to have to play his best, and Ozzie will have to have a couple of mediocre to bad games. In the end, I think Detroit's grinders will once again be the catalyst for playoff success. There's a reason that players like Maltby and Droopy are practically on lifetime contracts. The Wings understand that playoff series are won by digging in the corners and crashing the net, and they will put their crash line out there at any point in the game. IMO, Ozzie is the only one who can lose the series for DET, but it should be a good first round matchup.

As far as playoff revenue, it seems the rule of thumb is that a team nets around a cool mil for every home game.

A Pittsburgh report last year estimated the Penguins made an average profit of $1 million US for each of the 11 playoff games they hosted last season on their run to the Stanley Cup final.

Cha-ching! Canucks primed for playoff profits

I'm sure it varies some from team to team, and market to market, but each home playoff game gives a franchise a small step towards future success, and teams that consistently make the playoffs will increase their ability to build a cup winner. So, no, it's not likely that this year's playoff run will enable the Jackets to hunt for a high profile FA this off season (unless they make the finals), but a string of playoff appearances could move us up a tier. Of course, management of that revenue is the biggest factor.

An interesting tidbit I found in the search (from 2004):

Detroit is the best hockey town in the U.S. and the Red Wings have among the highest ticket prices in the league. But the franchise still lost money last year because the Red Wings had hockey's richest payroll and needed to make it to at least the third round of the playoffs to make money (the Red Wings got bounced in the second round last year). Team owner Michael Ilitch capitalizes on controlling Joe Louis Arena by having his concession company sell the beer and hot dogs during hockey games.

Forbes.com: NHL Team Valuations 2004

Quite suprising, considering Ilitch's deep pockets, and the fact that they had been a playoff regular for more than a decade (including 3 cups). But, IIRC, they were going thru a "Yankees syndrome" phase at the time, signing every FA in sight (If you've got 600 career goals, we've got a contract!).
