Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

And they’ll likely end up with another top 10 pick from Chicago. Things could start to turn around in a big way. I’m still not sold on Larsen as coach, but we’ll see how he handles all the young talent. Would be nice to see the Jackets secure Laine to a long term deal, but I’m not holding my breath.

That counts Chicago's pick at #6 (7.6%) plus + Columbus' pick at #12 (2.7%) totals 10.6%.

That won't happen, Chicago has 12 more points than Montreal, and Montreal only has 4 more games to play.

No, but if Chicago wins the lottery, they get to keep the pick. So Cols only has a 2.7% chance at first overall because they can’t get it via Chicagos pick.

Kekalainen, Larsen think pieces are in place for Blue Jackets

Columbus fell short of the playoffs, but progress was made during the 2021-22 season

"I thought there were a lot of positives," Kekalainen said. "Obviously, you can't be happy not making the playoffs, but we felt that we were competitive and we were going to be close. And I think, in that sense, thinking that going into the season, we can be fairly satisfied that we took the right steps from a year ago to where we are now."

"And I think that we're going to take the next steps here fairly quickly, as well, because there's going to be a lot of internal growth with the guys that we have, the age structure that we have with our young, very talented players. They're going to get better or they're going to get pushed hard to get better, and we have the right people working with them to get better.

"So, I'm excited about where the team's at, because like we said, we want to build this the right way, so that we can compete to win the Stanley Cup."

What might be intriguing is what happens next. The Blue Jackets go into the offseason with close to $30 million in cap space to play with, but such players as Patrik Laine, Jack Roslovic, Adam Boqvist, Nick Blankenburg and Daniil Tarasov are restricted free agents. Brendan Gaunce, Dean Kukan and Joonas Korpisalo are also unrestricted free agents, but by and large the Blue Jackets are built to last with many of the core pieces locked up for the future and the young talents still under team control for years.

Laine is likely the biggest piece of the puzzle when it comes to the CBJ offseason, as the wing played this season on a one-year qualifying offer and is now a restricted free agent. Laine, who had 26 goals and 56 points in 56 games this year, said Saturday he'd like to return to Columbus. "They have expressed they want me here, I've said the same thing," he said. "So you know, the feeling is mutual. Just figure out the term and the money and all that and I think we should be fine." Kekalainen's message Monday was similar: "I think he's expressed he wants to stay here. We've said we want him to stay. Now, it's just finding the common ground."

Patrik Laine, Blue Jackets continue to talk contract as busy offseason begins

The next few weeks should be chaotic throughout the NHL, with a cluster of clubs forced to make tough decisions to fit under a stagnant salary cap and others intent on making bold roster upgrades.

Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen, whose club fits the latter category, is expected to be among the more aggressive GMs. He needs to relieve a glut of forwards, especially on the wing, so that his young players can have regular spots in the lineup, and he may also want to change the composition of his defense, too.

But there’s one bit of business that Kekalainen & Co. were hoping to have wrapped up before the offseason kicks into high gear. Barring a dramatic change in the negotiations, it looks like Patrik Laine’s new contract may take a while.

Kekalainen and Laine’s agents, Andy Scott and Mike Liut, continue to communicate every few days and the negotiations remain amicable, Kekalainen said. But it doesn’t sound as if the two sides are anywhere close on a multi-year deal for Laine, a restricted free agent this summer for the final time in his career.

“Like with anything, it takes its course,” Kekalainen told The Athletic. “If they want to agree, we can do it quickly. If they don’t, it can take time. I don’t think it’s going to affect anything we do (next weekend) at the draft.”

That last line is key.

The NHL Draft will be held next Thursday and Friday in Montreal. That’s always a flashpoint in the NHL offseason, a time when NHL GMs meet in hotel lobbies and on the draft floor and major moves get made.

If the Blue Jackets aren’t going to get Laine signed to a long-term contract, they’d have to consider trading him rather than risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent next summer. (Is this all starting to sound familiar?) The draft could be seen as the Blue Jackets’ best chance to get the best return for the high-scoring Finn.

Kekalainen doesn’t see it that way, and he’s not putting any deadlines on a deal outside of those in the league’s collective bargaining agreement. Neither Liut nor Scott responded to requests for comment.

The Blue Jackets would have to extend a qualifying offer to Laine by July 11 to maintain his rights and give them a chance to match any offer he might receive as a restricted free agent. Laine has until July 17 to file for arbitration.

Nashville Predators Trade Mathieu Olivier to Columbus Blue Jackets

Olivier played forty-eight games for the Nashville Predators. His NHL debut came in the 2019-2020 season, and Olivier tallied three goals in the 2020-2021 season. Olivier was well known for his physical play and was an OG on the hard checking “Herd Line”. Olivier also played 156 games for the Milwaukee Admirals between 2018 and 2022. His nineteen AHL goals and three NHL goals were overshadowed by his eighty-eight penalty minutes while he played for the Nashville Predators.

2022 NHL draft: Answering the biggest questions entering the first round

The 2022 NHL draft, to be held at Montreal's Bell Centre, is scheduled to begin Thursday night at 7 ET (ESPN), with plenty of intrigue from the very top down.

Which team will be the most interesting to watch in Round 1?

I've got my eye on the Columbus Blue Jackets.

GM Jarmo Kekalainen watched his team struggle through two non-playoff seasons. He traded away veteran players Seth Jones, Cam Atkinson, David Savard, Nick Foligno and Max Domi, while giving the roster over to young talent last season. The Jackets are in an enviable position in the first round with the Nos. 6 and 12 picks. Their first pick could net Kekalainen, a good young defenseman such as Simon Nemec or David Jiricek. Or the GM could be aggressive and trade one or both picks to move up in the draft -- or for current NHL talent.

One thing to keep in mind: Multiple reports say Kekalainen was in on Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh before Tampa Bay dealt him to the Nashville Predators. There are rumblings that the Blue Jackets have discussed Jakob Chychrun with the Arizona Coyotes. The Jackets have the capital to start getting aggressive, and Kekalainen is just the GM to do it. -- Wyshynski

2022 NHL draft live updates: Pick tracker, analysis for all 32 teams

6. Columbus Blue Jackets: David Jiricek, D

Team: Plzen (CZREP) | Rank: INTS4
DOB: 11/28/2003 | Ht: 6-3 | Wt: 189 | Shot: R
Stats: GP: 29 | G: 5 | A: 6

How he fits: The Blue Jackets have to be happy Jiricek fell to them at No. 6. Some scouts considered him the best defender in this draft class, even over Nemec. Jiricek is another big, right-shot defender with a heavy shot and physical edge. The 18-year-old has offensive potential too, with five goals and 11 points in 29 games with Plzen HC last season. The Blue Jackets' back end has needed a face-lift since losing Seth Jones in a trade prior to last year's draft -- and ironically, Columbus used one of the picks acquired in that move to bring in Jiriceck, who could become a blue-line cornerstone. -- Shilton

12. Columbus Blue Jackets: Denton Mateychuk, D
Team: Moose Jaw (WHL) | Rank: NAS14
DOB: 7/12/2004 | Ht: 5-11 | Wt: 188 | Shot: L
Stats: GP: 65 | G: 13 | A: 51

How he fits: Interesting pick here for the Blue Jackets. Mateychuk wasn't projected to go quite this high. But with Korchinski and Mintyukov off the board -- and Columbus' desire to go defense -- Mateychuk was the choice. He loves to get involved in the play, sometimes so much so that it becomes a detriment in overcommitting. The key will be to figure out when to lead the rush and when to be more conservative. But that's correctable. His defensive game is good and he has a high hockey IQ. The Columbus back end was gutted when they had to trade Seth Jones and David Savard away in recent years. It looks a lot better now with David Jiricek and Denton Mateychuk ready to join Zach Werenski and Adam Boqvist. -- Wyshynski
