Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Max Domi traded to Carolina Hurricanes

Columbus received a defensive prospect in return

Just before the 3 p.m. trade deadline, the Columbus Blue Jackets completed a trade of forward Max Domi to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Aiden Hreschuk was a third round pick by Carolina last summer, and he was a freshman this year at Boston College. He scored one goal and seven assists in 37 games, with 23 PIM and a +9 rating. He’s undersized at 5’11”, but per his Elite Prospects page:

Hreschuk looks to jump into the rush, takes passes in motion from the point, and brings some defensive value. He’s a strong single variable defender, thanks to his mobility and physicality. He drives the play to the perimeter and throws the odd hit. Physicality translates across the defensive end.

Hreschuk is a high-calibre defender with the ability to defuse the rush high in the defensive zone. He plays a physical brand of hockey.

The Blue Jackets completely mishandled the Joonas Korpisalo scenario and now those chickens are coming home to roost. They have had multiple chances to trade him over the last two seasons, but a combination of overvaluing their own player and a bloated free agent market led to Columbus hanging on to their goaltender for far too long. Now, after multiple dreadful performances this season and a GSAA of -14.7, he has no trade value and will likely leave for nothing this offseason. The entire situation was completely bungled by the front office, directly a result of them overvaluing a player based on a small sample size.

I don’t really understand the Domi trade. Players were getting a lot in return this deadline. Max is a productive player on an expiring deal. Perfect rental situation. And they got a guy who was a third round pick. That player seems to be progressing well enough, but I don’t get it. I can’t believe someone wouldn’t offer something better. Maybe they really like the prospect.

He’s underperformed.

No doubt. But he’s still pacing for around 50 points. Usually can get a 2nd and prospect, sometimes even a first. Pens gave up a 2nd and good goalie prospect for a guy with similar numbers. Domi actually has more points. Just a strange move.

Just sayin': Over the history of the Blue Jacket franchise, their front office has never lead the league in best draft pick selections, free agent signings, and/or trades, etc. Regardless, his base salary this season is $6M and he's an UFA for 2022/2023. They probably:

1) offered some type of contract and he wasn't interested in staying in Columbus and/or wanted to test free agency.
2) figured that he's not worth resigning at $6M (or more) for multiple years.
3) needed to clear some salary cap space to resign some other guys
and/or
4) realize that if he leaves via free agency they get nothing, this way they at least get some prospect.

“Just the chance to put on that jersey in front of my whole family and friends (in Columbus) was special for me and I know it was just as special for my parents,” Meyer said before the game. “The first one is tough. There’s so much emotionally going on. You’ve waited your whole life for it. You can’t deny there’s a bit of nervousness and jitters and so much to think about. Now I’ve got my first one out of the way, hopefully I can relax and settle down.”

Just sayin': As it stands now, the Blue Jackets have a 10.3% chance of the first pick in the 2022 NHL draft. That's 4th behind Arizona at 16.6%, Montreal at 12.1%, and Philadelphia at 10.9%.

Edit: Fungo Squiggly pointed out that if Chicago win the lottery they keep their pick, so Columbus actually only has a 2.7% change to get the #1 selection.

And they’ll likely end up with another top 10 pick from Chicago. Things could start to turn around in a big way. I’m still not sold on Larsen as coach, but we’ll see how he handles all the young talent. Would be nice to see the Jackets secure Laine to a long term deal, but I’m not holding my breath.
