Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

The Boone Jenner era of Blue Jackets hockey will continue, as the team re-signs the center to a four-year, $15 million deal.

The Blue Jackets are bringing an Ohio native home: Forward Sean Kuraly (from Dublin) has signed a four-year, $10 million contract.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to terms with center Sean Kuraly. The Dublin, OH native spent 5 seasons with the Boston Bruins where he put up 24 goals and 44 assists in 270 games. Kuraly likely replaces Riley Nash as the fourth line center where he’ll take on a defensive role that’ll include time on the penalty kill. The move is likely an effort to stabilize that position and allow younger players to remain in Cleveland or take on more offensive roles in Columbus.

Well, he's not going to Seattle after all. After being selected in the expansion draft, Gavin Bayreuther did not sign with the Kraken, and has instead returned to the Blue Jackets, via a two-year deal.

Patrik Laine: "Last season was a tough one, but I’ve put it in the past and am looking forward to getting back to Columbus and helping this team move forward. I’ve had a good summer training and I’m excited about what’s ahead for me personally and for our team."

It looks like the Jackets still have almost $16M under the salary cap, but still might need to sign Texier, Bean, and Peeke. Even if they sign those three the Jackets should still have > $10M for a free agent or 2.

FWIW, Savard signed a free agent contract with Montreal and the speculation is that Foglino will sign a free agent contract with Minnesota.

Plenty of questions for Laine, Blue Jackets, despite one-year deal

Laine qualifying offer with Blue Jackets only gives so many answers

What might Laine’s contract(s) look like in the future?

After accepting his $7.5M Qualifying Offer, Laine will be an RFA next year and 1 year from UFA eligibility (2023). His qualifying offer next year will again be $7.5M.

How good is Laine, really?

Between this news, and the three guys they got in the first round of the draft, AND the two new Defensemen from Carolina and Chicago, this team could really make some noise maybe not this season but 2022-23 as long as they can convince Laine to stick around.

I’m absolutely excited for the future. If Sillinger and Johnson can hit the team in a couple seasons at the same time that the Russian boys are really hitting the nhl (Marchenko, Voronkov, Chinakov, Tarasov) that’s a ton of young talent. Paired with the existing guys like Ollie, Z, Laine, Boqvist, Elvis, the future is bright. This season is probably going to be rough, but I’m stoked to see how the kids develop, especially Chinakov and Tarasov in the AHL.

From everything I’ve heard, Chinakhov is going to get an honest shot to make the team this season. If he doesn’t, he’ll spend most or all of this season with the Monsters. Really hoping Johnson gets his reps this next season with the Monsters as well. He has all the tools to be wildly successful, and pretty quickly.

Forward Alexandre Texier signed a two-year, $3.05 million contract ($1.525 million AAV) with Columbus. The 21-year-old, who was a restricted free agent, scored 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 49 games with the Blue Jackets last season. Selected by Columbus in the second round (No. 45) of the 2017 NHL Draft, Texier has scored 29 points (11 goals, 18 assists) in 87 regular-season games and seven points (two goals, five assists) in 18 playoff games.

Jake Bean signed a three-year, $7 million contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday. It has an average annual value of $2.33 million. The 23-year-old defenseman, who was a restricted free agent, was acquired in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes on July 23. Bean scored 12 points (one goal, 11 assists) in 42 games as a rookie with the Hurricanes last season and one goal in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Selected by Carolina with the No. 13 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, he has scored 12 points in 44 NHL games.

CURRENT CAP SPACE: $12,134,138

They seem to be pretty smart and deliberate in how they're going about this rebuild. I expected them to fall into a pit of shit for about a decade (hello, Buffalo!), But they've surprised me. They might be able to turn things around reasonably quickly if they keep going this way.

They’ve already restocked the farm system. If they can turn Korpi into another first for next year, they’ll have 3 more firsts in what is supposed to be a very good draft. I’m not expecting much for this year other than hoping to see some kids improve (Foudy, Tex, Stenlund, Boqvist, Peeke, Et al) and play hard. But 2-3-4 years down the line could be really good. Assuming that they hit at even a decent rate on the draft picks.

Columbus Blue Jackets assistant Sylvain Lefebvre out after declining COVID-19 vaccination

Sylvain Lefebvre is out as a Columbus Blue Jackets assistant over his decision to not receive a COVID-19 vaccine, general manager Jarmo Kekalainen confirmed Monday.

"Per NHL protocol, he is unable to do the job we hired him for," Kekalainen told ESPN.

Last month, the NHL sent a memo to its teams stating that any people whose jobs entail them to be within 12 feet of club hockey operations personnel, including players, "are required to be fully vaccinated."

Lefebvre was hired in June to join new head coach Brad Larsen's staff after serving as an assistant coach with the AHL San Diego Gulls, the Anaheim Ducks' affiliate, for three seasons.

AHL Cleveland Monsters associate coach Steve McCarthy has been promoted to the Blue Jackets bench to replace him.

"Steve has done a great job working with our young defensemen in Cleveland the past five years and is ready for this opportunity," Larsen said in a statement. "He is a really bright, young coach with a great work ethic and I'm excited about what he will bring to our staff."

Columbus Blue Jackets sign G Elvis Merzlikins to five-year extension

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed goaltender Elvis Merzlikins to a five-year, $27 million contract extension through the 2026-27 National Hockey League season, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.

Joonas Korpisalo is under contract for 2021/2022 for $2.8M; he will be an UFA for the 2022/2023 season. Apparently the Blue Jackets have decided that Elvis is their long term goalie. Elvis did have better stats than Joonas last season. In case of an injury to either Elvis or Joonas, I wonder who goalie #3 will be for the upcoming season.
