2021 NHL Expansion Draft: Seattle Kraken select Gavin Bayreuther from the Columbus Blue Jackets

The surprise pick was a pending UFA

The pick comes as a surprise to most in the hockey world. In a move that upset many in Columbus, the Blue Jackets decided to expose Max Domi to Seattle. Also available to the Kraken were Kevin Stenlund and Dean Kukan. Most people believed the pick would be one of those three.

Bayreuther was signed as a free agent in 2020 and played mostly for the AHL Cleveland Monsters. He played in 19 games for the Dallas Stars, but only played 9 games in a Columbus sweater. He recorded one goal and no assists in that time. Personally, I was impressed by what I saw in those nine games. He had positive possession stats (CF% of 52) and was generally effective at moving the puck up the ice.

The Seattle Kraken had a period where they could negotiate contracts with exposed RFAs and UFAs. Seattle taking Bayreuther means the two parties have likely already agreed to terms on a new contract.

The good news in Columbus today is that Max Domi, Kevin Stenlund, and Dean Kukan remain Blue Jackets. Best of luck to Gavin in Seattle!

That's a nice haul for a guy who wasnt going to re-sign anyway. A promising young defenseman and some good picks.

What's with teams overpaying for Defensemen today? Buffalo swindled the Flyers earlier.

I think Chicago overpaid for a defensiveman 2 ways: 1) what they gave up in the trade and 2) the amount that they gave Jones in his contract.

Chicago acquired the star defenseman from the Columbus Blue Jackets before the NHL Draft began Friday, according to three people with knowledge of the move. Jones also has agreed to terms on a $76 million, eight-year contract extension that carries an annual salary cap hit of $9.5 million.

Besides the Blue Jackets will probably be better off with the 2 first round picks, Bean (traded the 2nd round pick), and Boqvist than a $9.5M a year defensive player for 8 years.

So long, Cam. Welcome back Jake.

Interesting move…..maybe CBJ will move Voracek and retain some salary in exchange for picks?

Maybe the worst trade in Blue Jacket history :

On June 23, 2011, the Flyers and Jackets finalized a deal that saw Jeff Carter head to Columbus. In return, the Flyers acquired a package that included Jakub Voracek, a 2011 first-round pick (Sean Couturier at eighth overall) and a 2011 third-round pick (Nick Cousins at 68th overall).
