Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Jones will be a free agent after the conclusion of next season, and this news is a tough blow. The defenseman was thought to have been in line for the Blue Jackets' captaincy, but now it appears that will no longer be the case. However, if you're the Blue Jackets' front office, you now have more time to decide what the next steps are.

With this news, the Blue Jackets should be looking for trade partners immediately, to get the most return for Jones. A lot of teams need a top-pair, right-handed defenseman, so there will be an excellent market for him. In return, the Blue Jackets should be looking for a high-end, playmaking center (hello, Jack Eichel). They're thin down the middle of the ice, which has been a theme in recent years.

Jones being eager to leave continues a trend in Columbus, and it's not a good one. In recent years, the Blue Jackets have struggled to hang on to their stars. It's a list that includes Artemi Panarin, Sergei Bobrovsky, Matt Duchene, Pierre-Luc Dubois (in slightly different circumstances), and now, most likely, Jones. The Dubois trade is a model that the front office can use as they determine what to do moving forward. Dubois didn't want to be in Columbus, so the Blue Jackets moved quickly and got a fairly solid return in Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic.

1st Ohio Battery needs to stop with their Jack Eichel fetish. He's not coming here, even in a trade for Jones.

Jones is 100% a Torts guy. When Torts fell out of favor, chances are that sealed the deal.

We can expect Werenski to want a big deal too - and in two years he's going to end up in Detroit.

Hey, we got JD back, if he’s good with it for now (and there’s no long term commitment with an internal promotion), I’m good with it. I actually prefer that they not take some players’ “feelings” into account. Based on the twitter reaction, however, I’m clearly in the minority.

For fucking real. Brindamour was apparently shit as a PP coach and he’s got the Canes doing well, so maybe? Of course, he’s got Aho and Dougie Hamilton.

It's amazing how much coaches improve when they have better players. Not that coaching is unimportant in pro sports, but coaches generally get too much credit unless they are the reason great players come/stay there.

Andy Reid "couldn't win the big one" but once he had Mahomes instead of guys like McNabb and Alex Smith, he suddenly got over that hump. Great coaching!

Mikhail Grigorenko dodges NHL free agency, elects to leave Columbus Blue Jackets for KHL

Veteran forward Mikhail Grigorenko, on the cusp of unrestricted free agency in the NHL, decided to return instead to the KHL on Saturday, agreeing to a three-year contract with CSKA Moscow, the league announced.

Grigorenko, 27, a 2012 first-round selection of the Buffalo Sabres, had four goals and 12 points for the Columbus Blue Jackets this season, skating in 32 games in his second tenure in the NHL. He was serviceable in the bottom-six forward rotation for former coach John Tortorella in Columbus and may have garnered interest from elsewhere had he hit unrestricted free agency later this month.

Merzlikins, Kivlenieks get to enjoy the ride at Mid-Ohio
CBJ goalies taken for a spin by IndyCar driver Alexander Rossi ahead of this weekend's race

Fellow Latvian CBJ goalie Matiss Kivlenieks had a little different take. While Kivlenieks has no fear when it comes to standing in the net and stopping pucks blasted at speeds up to 100 mph, he admitted he had a little nervousness while accompanying Merzlikins on the trip north, then following him in the truck with Rossi.

"At first, I am not going to lie, I was a little nervous," Kivlenieks said. "Especially that first lap because I didn't know what to expect, but then I just felt more and more comfortable and enjoyed the ride. Especially with a driver like that, you feel a lot safer.

"That third jump, it was pretty cool. It was awesome. It actually feels softer than you would think once you land those jumps."

Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Matiss Kivlenieks, 24, dies in 'tragic accident'

Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Matiss Kivlenieks died on Sunday at the age of 24.

The team said Kivlenieks died as the result of a "tragic accident" and suffered an apparent head injury in a fall.

Police in Novi, Michigan, said Monday that 24-year-old Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died after hitting his head following a Fourth of July fireworks accident.

Lt. Jason Meier of the Novi Police Department said a mortar-style firework tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby. Kivlenieks was in a hot tub and fled along with several other people, but he slipped and hit his head on concrete, Meier said.

"Medical personnel were called immediately, but he succumbed a short time later," the team said in a statement.

"We are shocked and saddened by the loss of Matiss Kivlenieks, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his mother, Astrida, his family and friends during this devastating time," Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson said in a statement. "Kivi was an outstanding young man who greeted every day and everyone with a smile and the impact he had during his four years with our organization will not be forgotten."

Kivlenieks started in two games for the Blue Jackets last season, and had recently played for Latvia at the IIHF World Championships. He played in eight total games in his NHL career, and was expected to compete for even more playing time next season.

Kivlenieks, who was undrafted, signed with Columbus as a free agent in 2017. He made his NHL debut at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 19, 2020, stopping 31 of 32 shots to beat the New York Rangers, 2-1.
