Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

In honor of their 20th season, they've apparently decided to play like an expansion team. Turd-riffic!

First Blue Jackets team still endures 20 years later

Two decades after the inaugural season, the memories live on for the Blue Jackets and the fan base

They came from near and far. Some were has-beens and never-weres. Others were NHL stars trying to recapture their games. Many were youngsters trying to prove they had what it takes to play in the best league in the world.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are going to have to make tough decisions all across the organization and it is only going to be made tougher when they evaluate their young talent.

They need to know who is a weapon and an asset for them moving forward and who they may need to cut ties with. They have a smaller than hoped-for pool and nonetheless need to decide what the expectations are for some of these players.

Here are the three players that may be on a shorter leash:

LIAM FOUDY

EMIL BEMSTROM

DEAN KUKAN

The Blue Jackets haven't been real lucky with the NFL draft lottery. In the history of the franchise, the Blue Jackets have only improved their position in the draft via "the lottery" once. In 2016 they improved from 4th to 3rd.

THE COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS HAVE THE 5TH BEST ODDS TO WIN THE NHL DRAFT LOTTERY; MAKE FIRST SELECTION NO LOWER THAN 7TH

The worst case scenario is that the Blue Jackets will pick no worse than 7th in the 2021 NHL draft.

Under the rules of the NHL Draft Lottery, which will take place June 2nd, the Blue Jackets have secured one of five spots in July's draft:
  • 1st Overall (Odds: 8.5%)
  • 2nd Overall (Odds: 8.7%)
  • 5th Overall (Odds: 24.0%)
  • 6th Overall (Odds: 45.3%)
  • 7th Overall (Odds: 13.5%)
The Blue Jackets finished 28th in the NHL, but the expansion Seattle Kraken enter the league next season and were granted the third best odds at the top pick, so Columbus' 4th worst record will give them the 5th best odds. (Dammit, Kraken.)

Jones will be a free agent after the conclusion of next season, and this news is a tough blow. The defenseman was thought to have been in line for the Blue Jackets' captaincy, but now it appears that will no longer be the case. However, if you're the Blue Jackets' front office, you now have more time to decide what the next steps are.

With this news, the Blue Jackets should be looking for trade partners immediately, to get the most return for Jones. A lot of teams need a top-pair, right-handed defenseman, so there will be an excellent market for him. In return, the Blue Jackets should be looking for a high-end, playmaking center (hello, Jack Eichel). They're thin down the middle of the ice, which has been a theme in recent years.

Jones being eager to leave continues a trend in Columbus, and it's not a good one. In recent years, the Blue Jackets have struggled to hang on to their stars. It's a list that includes Artemi Panarin, Sergei Bobrovsky, Matt Duchene, Pierre-Luc Dubois (in slightly different circumstances), and now, most likely, Jones. The Dubois trade is a model that the front office can use as they determine what to do moving forward. Dubois didn't want to be in Columbus, so the Blue Jackets moved quickly and got a fairly solid return in Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic.
