Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen gives coach John Tortorella vote of confidence

As the Columbus Blue Jackets spiral down the standings, general manager Jarmo Kekalainen gave coach John Tortorella a vote of confidence Tuesday.

"This coaching staff has gotten us out of slumps before. They've done a great job in the past five or six years they've been here. They are the ones that are going to get out of this jam as well, with the team that we have," Kekalainen said.

Just sayin': Tortorella did get the Blue Jackets into the playoffs the last 4 years.

NHL Power Rankings: 1-31 poll, plus a key positive or negative trend for every team

25. Columbus Blue Jackets

Previous ranking: 20
Points percentage: .479
This week: @ DAL (March 4, 6); vs. FLA (March 9)

The Blue Jackets have scored first in 16 of their first 23 games this season, which represents the most in the league. However a .375 points percentage in those games (6-6-4) is second worst in the NHL.

They've done it before - if they can rip off a streak of like 16 points in their next 10 games (4 games against Dallas, 4 games against Carolina, 2 against Florida), they will be right back in it.

Might be enough to just screw up the draft position, but that's happened too. And Nyquist might be back this month.

Blue Jackets will allow more fans to attend future home games

After welcoming fans for the first time this season on Tuesday night, the Blue Jackets will be allowing even more at Nationwide Arena starting with their next home game.

The team announced on Wednesday that they will allow 4,500 fans for their game Tuesday against the Florida Panthers. The move brings attendance in line with a new state health order that allows 25% of capacity for indoor sports arenas.

How will the playoffs work?
The league will have a traditional 16-team, best-of-seven playoff format this year, though it will look a bit different thanks to the divisional realignment. The top four teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs and be placed into divisional brackets for the first few rounds of the playoffs (No.1 seed vs. No. 4 seed, No. 2 seed vs. No. 3 seed).

The four teams that advance to the Stanley Cup Semifinal (known as the Conference Final in a normal year) will be seeded by their regular season points total, with the No. 1 vs. No. 4 seed and No. 2 vs. No. 3.

This format means, in theory, this year's Stanley Cup Final could feature two teams that typically play in the same conference in a traditional season.

Just sayin': It's hard to believe but right now the Blue Jacket's are only 4 points from a playoff birth, i.e. Chicago 29 points and Columbus 25 points. Actually 5 points as Chicago currently has the tie breaker.

I think they are on the tipping point of a complete rebuild. Torts does not have a contract after this year, a lot of their minors system is on the verge of being over-ripe and there are several vets (Foligno/Savard especially) who are UFAs after this season. They will need to make a decision after this year about Korpi or Elvis (and I'd bet they keep Korpi at this point)....

Hope everyone enjoyed the 4 year playoff run, it's going to be a bit until they are back at that level.
