Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

I think they are on the tipping point of a complete rebuild. Torts does not have a contract after this year, a lot of their minors system is on the verge of being over-ripe and there are several vets (Foligno/Savard especially) who are UFAs after this season. They will need to make a decision after this year about Korpi or Elvis (and I'd bet they keep Korpi at this point)....

Hope everyone enjoyed the 4 year playoff run, it's going to be a bit until they are back at that level.

Here's a complete list: https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/bluejackets

Also, it will be interesting to see who they lose to Seattle in the expansion draft. The thing that pisses me off about the draft is that Las Vegas (one of the best teams in the NHL) is excluded. Both Seattle and Las Vegas a got much better deal on the expansion draft than the Jackets and Wild did.......:mad2:

Just noticed that they are going to be paying Alexander Wennberg through 2025-2026.....

Not following closely this year but Tort's has to go right? Seems to be his MO - come in, rebuild toughness and winning but then wear people out? It's great he can get a lot out of fringe players, but at some point you have to wonder why top talent doesn't want to play and stay in Columbus. Winning with less talent is sort of fun for a while, but has its limitations. You could also get a lot of talent, keep them happy and win even more. Feels like that would require a new guy behind the bench.

I like him, though it seems like he's an asshat and stuck in his ways at times (my way or the highway, my sh*t doesn't stink and it's other people's problems to figure out how to deal with me).

Probably time to move on. I'll let the experts chime in.

HERE WE GO AGAIN: JOHN TORTORELLA SITS PATRIK LAINE DURING THIRD PERIOD AND OVERTIME AGAINST PANTHERS

5824_h.jpg

What's going on here?

This deserves an explanation: one that John Tortorella didn't offer post-game, after the Blue Jackets blew a 4-1 lead in the third period and fell to the Panthers in overtime.

One player was noticeably absent from the ice late in the third period and overtime: Patrik Laine. He already had a power play goal and an assist to his credit. Nick Foligno was the first forward over the boards in overtime (following Boone Jenner's face-off win), and Max Domi made the bad read that led to the Panthers' game-winning goal.

Yes, Laine was on the ice for the Panthers' second and third goals, but were they squarely on his shoulders? Tortorella seems to be imparting another lesson here for the franchise's new superstar. On Feb. 28 against Nashville, Jenner made an egregious turnover that directly led to a Nashville goal. He didn't miss a shift.

Blue Jackets' Patrik Laine says confidence level 'probably closer to zero' amid slump

The prolific 22-year old goal-scorer has yet to have an extended hot streak with his new team, hopes that continuing to work hard will help him shake recent scoring rut.

There are a lot of things for the Blue Jackets to learn about star forward Patrik Laine, and vice versa. Blunt honesty is not one of them.

Laine, 22, rarely settles for hockey clichés, so it wasn’t surprising Thursday when he assessed his current confidence level during a seven-game pointless skid as: “Probably closer to zero ... around there.”

Laine has eight goals and five assists in 18 games this season, but two goals and one assist were for the Winnipeg Jets, who traded him and Jack Roslovic to the Blue Jackets on Jan. 23 for Pierre-Luc Dubois and a draft pick. Laine has a 6-4-10 scoring line in 17 games with Columbus, as well as a minus-7 plus/minus rating.

He also has had multiple linemates, including Roslovic, Cam Atkinson and, most recently, center Riley Nash and forward Oliver Bjorkstrand. Nothing has really clicked yet to spark an offensive hot streak for Laine, a former 40-goal scorer.

His confidence is waning, but it’s not a new experience.

“We’re still humans,” Laine said. “(We go) through tough times every now and then, and sometimes it lasts two games and sometimes it’s seven games. We don’t know. But you’ve just got to work your way out of it, and that’s what I’m going to try to do.”

An expert here chiming in......

Just sayin': Tortorella's "coaching style" isn't working with Laine. Laine is a RFA after this season; I just can't see both guys with the Blue Jackets next season, one maybe both will be gone.

Tort's contract is up, he's 62, he's more or less assured a spot in the hockey hall of fame whenever he does call it a career. It's pretty clear he's not coming back and the Blue Jackets are letting him go on his own terms.

Laine will be back. He's Jarmo's boy.

I hope so. I think Patrik Laine has the potential to be a "top line" forward. At least he has a bigger upside as a player than Tortorella has as a coach. Tortorella is the Dusty Baker and/or Marvin Lewis of the NHL. He's good enough to barely get his team into the playoffs; however, once in they don't do shit.

That's not true though - Torts has won in the playoffs before and is the winningest American-born coach of all time.

He's more like a Bill Parcells analogue. The way it worked when he won doesn't work nearly as well anymore but he'll still make a team improve and in the case of Columbus, he brought sustained success that this franchise hasn't seen before. They might as well ride it out, the whole roster will be in flux next year and the odds of getting anyone quality to step in now are essentially zero.
