Blue Jackets get caught napping
Blackhawks score five first-period goals, fend off rally

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Last night was Nationwide Night in Nationwide Arena and, as they say, life comes at you fast. How fast? Five-goals-in-the-first-period fast. The Chicago Blackhawks flew to a four-goal lead in 20 minutes and there wasn?t an actuary in the audience who liked the Blue Jackets? chances after that. Still, there was a thrill. The Blackhawks had to hang on, behind some impressive goaltending from Nikolai Khabibulin, to post a 6-4 victory. The game had the feel of a mid-1980s Oilers-Flames shootout.

With captain Adam Foote out of the lineup nursing a lower-body injury, the Blue Jackets have leaned hard on defensemen Ron Hainsey, Anders Eriksson and Rostislav Klesla. Each of them has drawn an average of 29 minutes. But with Foote missing his third straight game last night when the Blue Jackets played host to Chicago, another defenseman has caught the eye of coach Ken Hitchcock.

Blue Jackets, Blues grab gusto with coaching hires

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Last week, the St. Louis Blues fired coach Mike Kitchen and replaced him with Andy Murray. This came two weeks after the Blue Jackets fired Gerard Gallant and replaced him with Ken Hitchcock.
To compare and contrast:
? Kitchen and Gallant are both fine men, salt-of-the-earth types with solid hockey bona fides. These are guys you root for. Yet their respective teams didn?t exactly run through any brick walls on their behalf.

Hitchcock: Jackets must protect puck in own zone

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Injured Blue Jackets defenseman Adam Foote has watched the past three games from the press box, giving him a slow-motion view of the action from the highest reaches in hockey. From that view, Foote said, it?s clear what the Blue Jackets? problem has been the past two games, when the tightly wound system the Blue Jackets played during a five-game winning streak has unraveled in two straight losses.

BLUE JACKETS NOTEBOOK
Svitov impresses Hitchcock with improving play
Monday, December 18, 2006

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

It appears that the Darryl Sydor for Alexander Svitov trade almost three years ago might finally be on the verge of paying off for the Blue Jackets.
On Jan. 27, 2004, the Blue Jackets sent Sydor, a defenseman, and a fourthround pick to Tampa Bay for Svitov and a third-round pick. Sydor helped the Lightning win the Stanley Cup later that season, and the Blue Jackets began the process of waiting for Svitov, a former No. 3 overall pick, to reach his potential.

Nice to see a 4-3 win over Detroit

That game was AMAZING! I'm very impressed with the drive of this team under new head coach Hitchcock! He's got these players believing they can stick with the best of teams... I think he can actually get the Blue Jackets to the playoffs within a year! I'm very impressed with the dramatic improvements they've already made! I'm also very impressed with Friddie Norrena, his glove save late in the third just outside the goal made my jaw drop! Maybe he should go play SS for the Reds! LOL

Jackets put on a show
Norrena makes sure stylish 3-0 lead doesn?t go for naught in hard-fought victory

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 last night and it was a game of exquisite beauty. The Jackets scored this goal in the first period where Sergei Fedorov and David Vyborny played catch coming through the neutral zone, Fedorov dropped a pass and took a defenseman away with him and Vyborny then rifled the puck down across the slot to Rick Nash, who banked in on the Detroit goal like an A-10 Warthog and rammed a backhand through Dominik Hasek.

Rematch with Wings to provide barometer

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets captain Adam Foote, out because of a lower-body injury believed to involve a hamstring, was a spectator Monday night in Nationwide Arena. He watched his mates score early, build a lead and hang on, for dear life, to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. It was like Billy Conn against Joe Louis, only Conn didn?t get KO?d in the 13 th. And it wasn?t a championship bout. Foote rode the emotional waves with the rest of the crowd.

DETROIT ? Blue Jackets defenseman Adam Foote was back in the lineup last night against the Red Wings in Joe Louis Arena after missing four games because of a hamstring injury. "The hamstring is like a groin," Foote said. "Your body tells you if you can go or not go. Well, I felt good the last two practices. Now I just have to get into it and see how it is, see how it handles the real action."

SELLING SUCCESS
With old salesman Hitchcock, it?s all about reading people and building teams
Friday, December 22, 2006

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ken Hitchcock was 14 when his father died of cancer, 20 when his mother died of cancer. After they were gone, he nearly ate himself to death. Pull up an armchair, psychologist. "My life is kind of a little bit of an open book," Hitchock said. It?s so true. The Blue Jackets? new coach is kind of a little bit of an open book, rather open and somewhat shut, dog-eared and accessible, deep and just out of reach.
