Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Columbus stays alive

The Columbus Blue Jackets aren't going away without a fight.

Their 3-1 win over the Dallas Stars keeps them in the playoff hunt and moves them into a tie with the Minnesota Wild for the No. 8 spot in the West. The Wild still have a game in hand, but the fight for the last two playoff spots is going to come down to the final weekend. The Blue Jackets are going to need a win over Nashville on Saturday and get a lot of help along the way.

It's still amazing that this team is even in the race. Not only with the roster it started the season with, but with how bad they were over the first month of the season.

Columbus either needs a win on Saturday and a Detroit loss to Dallas to pass the Red Wings, or a win and Minnesota to go no better than 0-1-1 over its final two games against Edmonton and Colorado.

That's asking a lot, but, hey ...

The CBJ basically need Dallas to beat Detroit in regulation. Very little hope that Minny will go 0-1-1 in its final two games considering the competition.

If you would have told me the Jackets would go 5-1-0 on their 6-game road trip, I'd have done back flips and bought my playoff tickets. It's depressing to know it probably won't be good enough.

There's always next year.....and this time, that actually can mean something....especially with 3 first round picks for the draft.

Sorry man - Detroit hasn't strung together 3 games like these past 3 all year long - hell they haven't put two games together like it either.

If they had played like this all year long, they wouldn't be fighting for 8th at all...more like 4th (they wouldn't be past chicago anyway)

12 goals in three games? While I doubt they could have kept that pace up an entire season, but if they could, I think they would have been unstoppable. They're playing the epitome of put it there and eventually it will go in.

Which is decidedly NOT what they were doing for the first 3 months of the season....

The key is franzen. If he's not playing like a 9 year old girl, the Wings are still pretty good. When Bertuzzi can play, he can almost pull off the same role, but he's not quite as good (or young) as Franzen is....

Franzen took off his skirt about two weeks ago and since then, the Wings have looked entirely different. I doubt they'll do much if they make the playoffs though, they still lack defensive depth.

If the puck keeps staying on the offensive side of the rink, do they really need defense?

Yes - this isn't air raid football where you can outscore guys by getting a TD every possession, hockey doesn't play that way.

And more importantly, the NHL playoffs sure as hell don't play that way.

NHL Playoff Picture: Wild look to punch their ticket

That task already seems undaunting, and that's before you look at the schedule and see that the Wild are playing the Edmonton Oilers on home ice on Friday night. The Wild are 14-7-2 in Minnesota. The Oilers are 1-9-0 in their last 10 games, being outscored 33-13.

In other words, the table is set for the Wild to get this wrapped up now and avoid any drama on the final day of the season. But should the Wild get one or no points, then they will get to do the dance once more on Saturday with the Colorado Avalanche in Denver, another of the NHL's worst clubs.

They'd still rather win both. No team wants to finish eighth this season, not with the way the Blackhawks have played from the start. Win the last two games and the Wild guarantee they won't finish lower than seventh.

The Blue Jackets will happily take 8th. :tongue2:
