Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Sunday's game @Trashville is ENORMOUS in magnitude now.

Oddly enough, EVERYONE ahead of the Jackets with the exception of Calgary (who is playing San Jose tonight and St. Louis on Sunday) are playing each other either tomorrow or Sunday.

They could be anywhere from 12th and virtually out of it with 21 games (and 4-5 teams to jump) to go or as high as 7th (given tie-breaks and the game in hand they will have)....

Cheer for no more 3-point games for these other teams too.

Crhist almighty.

Where else can you go on a tear like the CBJ are on right now and not even move?

They might win out and not move out of that 12th spot.

The competition committee (or whoever is in charge) should get rid of the point for an OT loss. That is killing the CBJ right now.

That said, if the CBJ had not taken December off they wouldn't have to worry about the other teams.

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) -- ESPN's Pierre LeBrun is reporting that the Columbus Blue Jackets have claimed former Sabres' captain Craig Rivet off of re-entry waivers.

That means Columbus gets Rivet for half of his $3.5 million contract.

The veteran defenseman, who's spent the last 16 years in the NHL, had played in only 23 games for Buffalo this year. Prior to being waived by the club Wednesday, he'd sat out the last 17 games straight.

The Sabres have not announced who will take over the captaincy. General Manager Darcy Regier also hasn't indicated whether he'll make any more roster moves between now and Monday's 3:00 PM trade deadline.

Not quite the move I was looking for.

That said, with the way the team has been playing lately it puts Howson in a tough spot. Who do you move? I would vote for Klesla and Filitov. Much of the winning lately has been done without either of them and they have some value.

I was hoping to lure Brad Richards from Dallas. I know he's been out with concussion symptoms so it's a risk, but it's minimal risk. If Richards gets healthy he could turn Nash into a 50 goal scorer.

Dallas is going to be looking to get something for Richards as he becomes a free agent this summer.

I really don't think there's much of a market for Krusty. Filatov would look great in a Wings uniform - given a chance to train with Datsyuk would be sick.

You know what is going to get Nash to 50 goals potentially? A guy like Calvert and Umbie keeping their scoring up and Voracek and Huselius being decisive with the puck and remembering that it's ok to shoot. If teams have to respect the other players and can't go 3 on 1 against Nash, he'll find his goals.

to be honest the top 2 lines for the CBJ are good enough to make this team a playoff team. As those lines go, the CBJ go. It's the 3rd and 4th lines and the D that need a bit more help.

Wouldn't mind seeing Sestito back with the Jackets. Not sure why they sent him down. He's an ideal bottom six player for them. Also good in front of the net.

But I actually think the bottom six has played pretty well. I remember some dominant shifts from the last few games. The D could definitely use another piece.. not sure they're going to get a puck-mover now that McCabe and Goligoski are off the market. I keep hearing that John-Michael Liles is being shopped, he could be a nice addition. Might not be cheap, though.

Scenario for tomorrow...

They are playing Trashville directly, therefore a win will place them in front of Nashville (no worse than 11th place)

[Mark May]cago plays Phoenix who, at 75 points is not in direct competition for the 8th spot. Therefore, cheer for a Phoenix regulation win to keep Chicago at 70 points in 62 games (32 wins)

Anaheim is playing Colorado. Colorado has, for all intents and purposes, given up on the season. But they could still play well enough to beat Anaheim. Anaheim currently has 69 points (32 wins) in 62 games. Even if they get 1 point to get to 70, and the CBJ win, the CBJ will jump them.

If this scenario plays out (CBJ win, Nashville regulation loss to the CBJ, Chicago regulation loss, Anaheim Regulation or OT loss), the CBJ will be in 9th place in the West with 3 games in hand over 8th place Calgary (who also plays St Louis tomorrow so a loss there would help, but they have 71 points in 63 games)....

Schedule for the beginning of March:

Mar 1 @Vancouver
Mar 3 @Edmonton
Mar 4 @Calgary
Mar 7 @St. Louis
Mar 9 St. Louis
Mar 11 Los Angeles
Mar 12 @Carolina
Mar 15 Boston
Mar 17 Detroit
Mar 19 @Minnesota
Mar 20 New Jersey

that's hardly a brutal stretch - the toughest game is obviously @Vancouver and then @Calgary on the back-end of the back-to-back with Edmonton.
