They have basically the same team as last year; is Scott Arniel just doing a better job than previous coaches?

they underperformed last year and suffered from a lot of injuries. this year they are playing very well. hitch is a legendary hall of fame coach, arneil has proven himself to be a good coach in the ahl. i think a lot of credit goes to hitch for his rigidity and forcing guys to round out their games, playing two ways and with structure. i also think arneil has implemented a system which seems to fit this team well. then again this was only the 4th game within the division, many, many more to come. i still stick by my assumption that this is a 6-9th place in the west type of team with the schedule and division they play in.

If a team (any team) underperforms to some extent the coach takes the blame. It just seemed to me that the team wasn't going anywhere with Hitchcock and then Noel. However, I'm not a hockey expert maybe they laid the needed groundwork which allowed Arniel to succeed, I really don't know.

Anyway Columbus (13-6-0), is off to the best start in franchise history and Arniel has to be doing something right.

Personally, I'd say it's amazing what some confidence will do. I go back to the second San Jose game in Sweden and then the early Minnesota game they won, both by a single goal. Those were games they didn't get last year, and thr ability to get those has really energized the group and made them think they can find ways to win those tough 3-2 and 2-1 games.

Very similar to 2001 and 2002 tampa bay bucs. It wasn't a lack of talent, it was a lack of confidence and a culture of always coming up short that needed to be broken. Chucky was able to break the Bucs loose from that mentality. Arneil is doing the same here with the CBJ

could be. but i think often times those are the easier answers.

if you look back at last year (and this year really) this is still a generally young team. when you are leaning on kids who are barely of drinking age against grown men development means a lot. be it russell, strals, methot, jake, brass, dorsett, boll, etc.

some may say that hitch was unable to put it together, i see something all together differently, he laid a foundation. he set the groundwork, look around this team, who is on the ice in a one goal game with two minutes left? about every forward has earned the ability to play in that situation. it cant be said enough that i think hitch will either take the player and turn them into coal dust or diamonds by using high pressure, high levels of structure, and compete. the output youve seen across the league over the last few years include the likes of jake, nash, brass, carter, richards, etc. all that being said you have to give lots of credit to arniel.

also to look at are games missed, last year you had klesla 27, commie 57, methot 60, hejda 60, and russell/strals missing about ten games. youll have injuries and you just hope you dont have a lot at the same time, in the same position.

the most important thing is the next game, critical points against the isles. its important to head out onto the island and play well on the crap ice there.

This...

It was a bummer being there for such a good game last night and seeing the stadium at barely 50% capacity...

I wonder if ticket prices have anything to do with that. I have been to several NHL games, but have always gotten the seats for free, and don't think I could justify shelling out even half the face value of those tickets.

also, talking hockey at lunch today and we were discussing the hitch/arniel thing. one of the non hockey fans brought it up and after about 5-10 mins with a couple of guys basically threw out "so hes like a bill parcelles" probably the best explanation for a football fan. both like big, physical, hard nosed teams. both have "their guys" and play in a structure and rule with an iron fist.
