Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

I don't believe I indicated that I found anything wrong with what Hitch said. Just don't think it's too likely this year.
understood. however, i dont think the casual fan understand the intensity of hitch. im not sure hes burkie but close. if hitch was coaching a kindergarten tiddlywinks team against the 95-96 wings or the 80s oil dynasty or the 76-77 habs (or the habs of a certain posters era) or the 29-30 bruins, etc. hed expect to win, hed expect reckless play them to compete, play heavy. ill be frank its been clear that ownership is needed in some aspects. nash signed his ltc, and its become evident that umbie has become the emotional connector and that what we saw last year from jake was challenged to be better, last year and this summer and has spent more time in the weightroom and working out than tony little and tony horton combined lets be frank that manny umm how do i say this about such a great guy well but i guess he deflated and didnt dig in, and while peca maybe among the last of a dieing breed it appears the 3rd line will be phalsson who flat out has the ability to bog down the game and pent the other team in.

blah balh i think im degenerating but i think its sometimes hard to explain hitchs self proclaimed benevolent dictatorship

I thought that the prevailing opinion was that everyone in that division improved somewhat in the offseason while Detroit back slid a little.

No?

I think for the first time in nearly a decade Detroit will be significantly better at the END of the year than when they begin the year....

Give all those studs in their minors system a chance to play with the big boys along with Dats and Z and Franzen as well as Holmstrom coming into the year without a major surgery for the first time in 4 years will really help I think.

Some athletes celebrate a new contract with an extravagant purchase. Not Blue Jackets grinder Derek Dorsett.

The pride of Kindersley, Saskatchewan is a bit more thrifty.

"I went to Easton and bought some T-shirts at Nordstrom, if that counts," Dorsett said.

The feisty 22-year-old forward signed a two-year contract extension on Saturday worth $1.12 million.

Dorsett has one year remaining on his current two-way deal which pays him $563,000. The new contract is a one-way deal. Dorsett will make $550,000 in the 2010-11 season and $575,000 in the 2011-12 season after which he will be a restricted free agent.

"We feel Derek is on his way to establishing himself as a good NHL player," Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. "We have been talking with him for a few weeks and this was a chance to show our belief in him . . . The one-way contract gives him some security."

Dorsett played with passion and purpose in a rookie season that saw him score four goals to go along with 150 penalty minutes in 52 games. He was a fearless competitor and an agitating presence throughout the season. He also was one of the Jackets' more noticeable players in the post-season series against Detroit.

Howson has not been afraid to reward players despite limited NHL experience. Dorsett was re-signed a week after the Jackets awarded a four-year deal to Derick Brassard, who's played just 48 games.

“It's good to feel like I'm one of those guys who are going to be a part of this team," Dorsett said. "It was exciting to see the club give (Rick Nash) an eight-year deal and Brass a four-year deal."

Dorsett will see fourth-line duty and he's one of the candidates, along with Andrew Murray and Mike Blunden, auditioning to player center.

Vermette re-signed for 5 years at 3.75 million.

:banger:

People are saying this is an overpayment (as well as Brassard). As long as these guys progress as they should.. they'll be steals down the road. Love what the team is doing right now.

Just wish there would be a Chimera and a third for Mike Van Ryn swap. :tongue2:

The NHL preseason has started: Columbus 3, Pittsburgh 0 (with 1:35 in the 2nd period), 2 goals by MAXIM MAYOROV whoever he is?

Sure caught me by surprise.

This is purely off memory, but Mayorov was drafted a couple of years ago (4th round or 5th I can't remember). I think he was considered a major talent, but risky pick as teams didn't want to mess with trying to get him out of Russia.

Haven't heard much about him since.

Penguins ended up coming back and winning. Mayorov had 2 as someone else said, Voracek had 1 and Picard had 1.

Tangradi for the Pens had 2 assists.. great sign, and I hope he makes the team. Looks like the Crosby line absolutely dominated..

Also, so good goalie play:

Blue Jackets goaltender Mathieu Garon, signed in the offseason to back up NHL rookie of the year Steve Mason, was sharp in stopping all 21 shots he faced in two periods of work.

The third-period stampede against goaltender Dan LaCosta siphoned the enthusiasm from 40 productive minutes.

Good grief.

Chimera takes a puck to the mouth and flees to the dressing room for stitches. Second shift back? Hit from behind and goes headlong into the boards and ends up going off on a stretcher. Sounds like no major injury, but jeez......

Modin injures his knee and is out for awhile. Hitch says "Weeks, not days". Shocking. :ohwell:

CBJ lost 2-0 at Minnesota last night.

Lost 3-2 at Nashville Saturday night. Sestito is the newest injury. Hit his head on the ice at the end of a fight. They brought the stretcher out for him, but he was able to skate off with some assistance from a couple teammates.

The puck drops on the first home preseason game here in about 2 hours. Not looking forward to the hike through the rain to get there.

Was Sestito's fight with Jordin :pissed: Tootoo as the local paper mentioned? That prick's long overdue for a back-of-the-head to the ice...
