Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Good stuff jo. Kind of sucks that the division is stacked at this moment in time. St. Louis has a lot of young talent that really started to come together last year. I figured they'd be a pesky team in the playoffs, might have been wrong about that.

Detroit is Detroit.

Chicago is going to score at least 30 goals per game (might give up 14 though).

Nashville has some stud d-men.. Weber is a beast and Suter isn't far behind. Pekke Rinne looked very good last year. They're building the right way..

Should be an entertaining season. Just hope the Jackets can get the powerplay going, and I hope Mason keeps it up..

Regarding Zubov, I think he would be a nice addition to the Jackets, but not for the price he'll require. Age is the big thing, he's basically skating on borrowed time, and injury questions are magnified. He's what I'd consider a speed/finesse player, in contrast to Lidstrom, who's about the same age but a positional/finesse player. Lids losing a step will expose chinks in his otherwise exceptional armour, while Zubs losing a step may render him ineffective. What Zubs has going for him, and what CBJ could really benefit from, is his uncanny shooting talent. He's one of the few D-men who is a no-brainer in a shootout lineup. He doesn't really have any moves, but can pick a fly out of the air on a quick, hard shot, with almost no wind up. He would have a big effect on CBJ's PP, which they need almost more than anything else. In the end, I guess it would come down to whether CBJ wants to invest in a 1-2 year veteran "rent-a-star" to hopefully solidify their young roster, or spend the money on a younger talent who would contribute over a longer span. IMO, CBJ desperately needs a pure shooter, but I'd like to see it in the form of a winger who could also point the PP (though I'm not sure if there are any available). I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Zubs in a CBJ uni (despite his history with the Evil Empire), but I wonder if it would be the best investment.

My childhood was awesome. A favorite team won every game.

This is always going to be my first jersey though.....

short story

what edm got was a salary dump to clear space. brule who we all know has potential and never put anything together in columbus. a 21 year old 6th overall pick who didnt find a role.

what the cbj got. a 26 year old coming of a knee injury a guy who has scored 27 goals. top six potential. hell play tough along the boards and go in and battle for pucks, better size and plays like a bull with a good shot. not a great passer or receiver of the puck.

short term i think cbj wins, they are a better team with torres than they are with brule. upgrade.

long term. ? oilers could ream the jackets long term, or brule may never break out. in question.
bump, on this trade....

in short dallas and philly made it pretty far... they are pretty comparable.

i havent seen anythign on this yet. commodore is a right handed shot.
klesla L
hejda L
russell L
rome L
methot L
(hainsey L)
(wilson L)

anyone see why moving the puck out of the zone may have been extra hard at the end of the year?
the only R shot left in the upper level of the system is andrei plakhanov who is a year or more out from the big club.
ill bump this one too, same issue here today. reality is the R is needed. but i still think the team is willing to ice the team as it stands today, others need to make a move.
rome-wilson-hainsey are all gone....

jo4h, a few thoughts.

1. To begin with, it is clear you know way more about hockey than I do; in discussing the Jackets with me you are truly engaged in a "battle of wits with an unarmed man.":tongue2:
disagree, can we agree to disagree?

2. The Huselius signing was a very pleasant surprise to me. beatlejuice! Commodore not so much. He was -9 on a playoff team (Senators) in 26 games; the team was 9-13-4 after he joined the team, and they had been 34-18-4 before the trade. WTF? Doesn't seem like he was a positive addition to the Sens. (OTOH, we are clearly not the Sens.)
wasnt commodore 2nd in ice time for the sens during the playoffs? he was a key player in two cup runs. one with the oilers and one with the canes. big physical, nasty. great "character guy" that trade included corvo and eaves i believe? hes a big guy that can play against the likes of #96 with the wheel on his sweater, beach (chicagos big boy first rounder) etc for years to come. you dont hang around commodores crease without paying a price, and if you go into the corner hes gonna be on you like a wet canvas tarp. hes not fast but hes mobile. toots is a better skater and has more upside but commodore youll like. columbus will like him. he has the ability to stick up for anyone, against anyone. no more play 11 guys and havesome take a run at a player and shelley has to climb over the wall. with the possibility (likelyhood) of brassard, jake and nikita in the lineup in the next 2 years you need someone who can keep the other team honest. commodore will do that. he also should be coming into his prime. the next 4 years should be his best 4 years. long story short, maybe those stats say something. maybe they dont. all i know is mike commodore is a guy you go to battle with. hitch likes battlers. the bugs are going to play a battling game. you want see alfie, spezza, etc here. you wont sorry. i can see your disapointment but i like the move. he can move the puck on the first pass and the facts are he wont generate any offense for you. cold hard truth.

3. I guess I am more of a Hainsey fan than most on here. I think in today's NHL he is well worth $4.5 mil per year, and I think more of an effort should've been made to keep him.
could be. but like i said, he limits your ability to generate transition game. he doesnt check, doesnt play great positional defence. he does carry the puck well and he shoots a lot. not exceptionally hard, not exceptionally accurate. like bk said i think he leaves a hole on the man power, but even strength we have an upgrade. toots ran the second pp unit in the garden. i think what you saw is hainsey hang around a long time, maybe his value isnt what it seems. atlanta needed something. nice guy, im willing to let him go. i dont think his terms are redic, you probably would have signed here earlier this year for 3.75 type deal. but time will tell.

4. Zherdev I am conflicted about, but the trade seemed one-sided (and not in the CBJ's favor) to me.
could be. but what was nik? a kid who didnt fit into the system. played and east west game. is he going to head home to russia if that big contract comes? if you keep nik you need 2 more e-w type guys. some of the stuff has been aired. trust me i doubt it would work. toots is a good player on a contract that right now looks awesome, next year will look better and by 2011-2012 will be a steal. i think fans will like him. z had skill and flare. i dont know how he fits in with what you want to do in columbus.

5. You brought up a number of excellent points that had not occurred to me. Thanks for the education!
hey its up to you. but you never told me. upgrade downgrade?

but you need someone to go toe to toe with homer/franzen in the painted area. beach in chicago etc. hes more mobile than some think, but not fast. 2nd pairing warrior. hes a great guy and good character.

I'll just have to wait and see the season before I believe that the Jackets did not get fleeced in the Rangers trade.
defined fleeced? i think the rangers may win the trade but the move is an upgrade for columbus. the jackets lost points and a wizard. if i owned stock in pepcid or advil for the columbus distributor id sell it. zherdev wasnt a long term solution. im sorry. the trade was more than a+b for c+d if you ask me.

What do the updated lines look like, JO?

who knows. hitch likes his pairs. so youd have to toss those into the random generate. hes always liked nash-modin but nash-huselius coudl be exciting. nash plays with a similar style to iginla who works very well with huselius.

im not willing to do anything more than pencil a lineup.
bump.

Blue Jackets' Filatov turns down KHL overtures - Sporting News staff reports - NHL - Sporting News

Top prospect LW Nikita Filatov has told the Russian publication SovSport that he plans to play this season for the Columbus Blue Jackets, even though he has been offered significant contracts by several KHL teams.

Filatov, 19, says his immediate NHL plans are firm, although things could change if he doesn't get the ice time he needs to develop with the Blue Jackets.

"When I was 18, I made a decision to play in the NHL," Filatov told SovSport in an interview reported by the Columbus Dispatch. "This decision did not come easy. But what is the point of backing off now? It would make more sense if I didn't play well. But everything is going good for me right now across the ocean."'

Filatov had four goals in eight games last season for the Jackets. He's likely to play a lot more minutes this season.

"I don't want to comment on what the KHL is doing," Jackets GM Scott Howson said. "Nikita is supposed to come here next week, and we are looking forward to him making a strong push to make our team. He is an elite young player."

Though Filatov has rejected KHL overtures, the Detroit News reports that Detroit Red Wings veteran Darren McCarty might not.

McCarty, a popular veteran forward, reportedly is in Moscow pursuing possibilities for a KHL season that begins in mid-September.

McCarty, 37, played 13 games for the Wings last season and 19 for their AHL Grand Rapids affiliate. His interest in the KHL was triggered by Detroit's decision not to make him an offer.

The Hockey News: Ryan Kennedy's blog: THN.com Blog: Nash set to explode into superstar status
What makes a player worthy of being deemed a first-class NHL star? For goalies and defensemen, numbers don’t always tell the story. Grant Fuhr, for example, never had a great goals-against average, but he stopped the right pucks at the right time and has the wins and Stanley Cups to back up his Hall of Fame clout.

But star forwards need to put up numbers. Even the best two-way players – Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg tend to roll off the tongue quickly – can put up 90-plus points in a season.

Which brings us to Rick Nash, savior of Columbus. Maybe those of us who watched him grow will always think of Nash as a youngster, but the captain of the Blue Jackets is now in the prime of his career. Though he hasn’t tallied 80 points in a season yet, I believe this is the year we’ll see it happen.

To date, Nash has been denied that offensive plateau for a number of reasons. Early on in his career, he simply didn’t have enough talent surrounding him to help along the way. Back in 2003-04, when the powerful left winger rang up 41 goals en route to sharing the Rocket Richard Trophy with Jarome Iginla and Ilya Kovalchuk, his teammates included David Vyborny and Nik Zherdev. Nash had 57 total points that year, which was tops on the Jackets.

"Lines that you dream about" unveiled in opening session
Rick Nash figures a midget hockey plugger could shine on his line at the Canadian Olympic orientation camp.
“It was pretty fun out there, playing with pretty much the best two players in the game,” the Columbus Blue Jackets captain said Monday night after the second practice at the Pengrowth Saddledome. “They can make anybody look good.”
In what could be a preview of the No. 1 line for Canada at the Vancouver Olympics, Nash patrolled the left side with Sidney Crosby, of the Pittsburgh Penguins, in the middle and Jarome Iginla, of the Calgary Flames, on the right.
